✍ - a memory of their mother

She is nearly as pale as the sheets as she lies on–even her lips, which Hanzo remembers painted red. The rims of her eyes, once severely shaped with dark eyeliner and powder, are faintly pink; the eyes themselves stare listlessly up at the ceiling, the dark blue irises seeming to have greyed like a clear indigo night invaded by stormclouds. 

Genji fidgets next to him, his little hands picking at a scab on his knee. Hanzo puts his hand out to stop him.

“Stop,” he says, quietly. “You will make a scar.”

Genji looks at him, then over at their mother, still lying silently in bed. She hasn’t spoken to either of them–not today, and not for weeks now. Sometimes her lips move faintly or her eyes well up with tears, but if she is speaking to anyone, nobody else can see them.

“Can I go, anija?” Genji asks uncomfortably. Hanzo’s heart sinks. He knows that it is unsettling to see their mother this way, but it is their duty as her sons, is it not? Even if she barely seems to see them, they should not leave her, should not give up.

Then again, when Genji’s lip curves down like that it is difficult for Hanzo to force him to do anything he does not want to do. So he stands up, gives his brother his hand and helps him to his feet. “I am going to stay a little longer. Do you want to go to my room and wait?”

Genji thinks about it. “I don’t want to do maths with you again.”

“No math,” Hanzo promises, gently. “I will read you a story.”

“With dragons?”

“All right. With dragons.” He smiles, nudging Genji toward the door. Mother’s room opens onto the courtyard, so they can let in the fresh air during the day–Hanzo has to watch after his brother as he hops off the veranda and scampers away through the garden. “Watch out for the koi pond!”

Genji hears him, ducks around it, and finally vanishes through a door on the other side of the courtyard. Hanzo waits a moment, lets his breath go, then closes the door and sits back down, head bowed.

“You are so good with him.”

His head whips up again. His mother has turned her head to face him with the barest of smiles. She withdraws her hand from under the covers, which seems to take a great deal of effort–but when she lays her arm on top of the sheets, palm up, Hanzo can see amidst the twisting map of veins clearly visible through her forearm that her muscles have wasted terribly while she has been bedridden. 

He hesitates, then gingerly takes her hand. “Kaasan.”

“Hanzo.” She smiles, her fingers twining weakly with his.  “Look after your brother.”

“I will,” he says, and something about hearing her voice again is making him feel as if his chest might burst–love, relief, sadness? Why sadness? He has wanted to speak to her again for so long.

“My boy,” she says fondly, closing her eyes again, but with content. “My good boy.”

Hanzo holds her hand as she falls asleep again. He holds her hand until it goes cold.

💗 Has my muse ever been in love?

Yes. It didn’t go too well. 

👠 What was my muse’s last serious relationship like? 

It was not really a relationship so much as it was a deep attraction that both of them knew about but didn’t dare act on. That they loved each other was never in question--for Hanzo it was mostly an internal conflict as to whether he should say anything at all or keep squashing it down. In the end they could only hide it from each other for so long, so things reached boiling point between them and stuff got weird. Given the circumstances, it did not end prettily.

So basically, it wasn’t a relationship at all, just a long stretch of Hanzo pining and torturing himself as usual before finally messing everything up. Gee, I wonder who it was.

💯 What is my muse’s ideal date? 

Hanzo is very traditional and prefers to have the upper hand in this sort of situation; meaning he’d like to ask the person (which could take months if not years) and plan the date himself. He’s not really one for large gestures and would feel a bit embarrassed if his partner did something like that for him on a date, but he’d love planning quiet, personal dates, generally just in a private, romantic place with meaning to both of them where they could just talk.

💘 What are the ways my muse says ‘I love you’ without actually saying it?

In general Hanzo expresses himself much better through actions than words and this is where he would actually shine in a relationship (or even just a friendship). He shows a lot of devotion to those he cares about whether he realises it or not and would always go out of his way to be mindful to them. Things as small as just doing little favours to make their life easier without being asked, or just keeping an eye on them throughout the day. 

He is also very, very protective of people he loves, so I suppose he expresses his love by taking down their enemies (in combat or otherwise). P:
