Attention new kitten owners
So it’s kitten season and I feel obligated to make this post since 10384739 of my friends are getting new kittens!
People think cats are an easy animal to have ~ and sometimes they are! But please don’t forget that they have needs to in order to live their best lives!
*Spay/Neuter your kittens! There are WAY WAAY too many already, tiny babies get euthanized everyday for this reason!
*GET THEM VACCINATED!! Outdoor cats require rabies, distemper AND LEUKEMIA vaccines!! They WILL encounter other strays etc outside even if you don’t see it happen. Leukemia is passed from cat to cat.
Indoor cats should at the very least have rabies and distemper. There is always a chance they will get outside and have a face off with other cats/wildlife. Realistically most indoor cats escape at least once or twice in their lives!
*If you got your kitten from a random person, or just got it from outside, IT WILL HAVE WORMS! Deworming is a routine part of kittenhood- if your kitten is at all immuneocompromised (you won’t be able to tell) worms could reallly destroy them and kill any nutrition that you’re giving them! Normally several rounds of dewormer from the vet (I really don’t think Walmart etc brands work) are necessary to rid them of worms.
*FEED THEM KITTEN FOOD ONLY! not CAT food. They are babies-just like human babies, and need special nutrition to grow and fully develop their brains and bones properly. Healthy kittens = healthy adult/senior cats!
**DECLAWING IS NOT AN OPTION! Have plenty of scratching posts and place them around where you see them scratching, they will choose the post over the corner of your couch and your problems will be solved.
Getting a kitten is a lifelong investment, just like a dog. They need yearly vet check ups and vaccines to make sure they’re healthy! I took the time to type this out for the happiness and healthiness of the kitties, not to throw any shade in any way. I am always here to answer any questions and help however I can!
