LA Works Swim Session

The Downey High School KIWIN’s collaborated with the Santa Fe KIWIN’s in another event near Los Angeles, where they swam and played around with young kids and adolescents with disabilities. It was a great way to beat the heat, and to see a smile on a young child’s face as they have a game of volleyball or shoot some hoops in the water.

Hosted and organized by President Priscilla Ayala, the Swim Session was a great way to spend the day. All of the kids were in a nice and inviting environment, and allowed them to learn more about each other and have an overall great time.

The KIWIN’s relaxed and had a few laughs in the day. It reminded everyone of how much we can really do even with obstacles blocking the way.

Commerce Clean Up

The KIWIN’s are knows for helping out others. That’s why this was their 2nd year helping out the city of Commerce and Steve Craig, the owner of the Citadel Outlets. Steve has seen the potential in the KIWIN’s, and they have not let him down once. Steve Craig has worked with the KIWIN’s with their annual Shopping Extravaganza, and raised over $900 in the process, collectively. But the KIWIN’s don’t gain this fame alone. They worked with the Santa Fe High School KIWIN’s.

Once the KIWIN’s had gotten there, they started off running. They worked on an entire street along side the highway, pulling weeds and picking up trash. Cleaning the gutters and sweeping up the sidewalk. Near the end of the project, the city of commerce seemed a bit more inviting.

The KIWIN’s even got a chance to be interviewed and filmed by CBS Los Angeles. It allowed the KIWIN’s name be spread throughout the community, and to show their commitment to serving others, and overall fin time they had bonding.

After a very generous $100 donation from Steve Craig to the Downey High School and Santa Fe High School KIWIN’s, we ended off the day with some bonding time with each other at the beach.

Nation Night Out

Kids are needed to be safe on the streets while playing outside, or riding their bike outside. That is why it was the KIWIN’S duty to help educate young children the safety of the streets, and how to follow the law, along with having fun in their new bicycle course. Through this course, kids were taught how to make sure to look both ways at a cross walk before continuing, watching for pedestrians that may be crossing, and using their arms and hands as turn signals when needed.

President Priscilla Ayala (left) and Vice President Luisa Villaseñor (right) were in charge of the booth, and making sure that everybody in the club, including some very helpful Key Club members, did their assigned task in a timely manner, and supervised the children on the track.

Along side Priscilla and Luisa, were Treasurer Julia (left) and Assistant Secretary Victoria (right). They held down the fort at the Green Task Force canopy. Along with educating both the adults and children about water conservation and benefits of recycling, they also showed off their KIWIN’S spirit, and danced out in the public, attracting attention to both booths, and allowing them to help at the bike safety booth.

All in all, the bicycle safety booth was another success for the Downey High School KIWIN’S and Key Club, as we not only allowed the children of the city to have a better understanding on recreational safety, but also brought all of the club together by bonding and having fun at the Downey Nation Night Out.
