Kizzy Matiakis as Effy in Hübbe’s La Sylphide, Royal Danish Ballet on tour in China, 2016.
Matiakis restored my faith in the perfect Effy, after several misses, she made me love the character even more than I did when I first discovered the ballet. She is masterful in her portrayal, very sensitive and perfectly in tune with her fellow dancers, no matter which James she’s dancing opposite (I’ve seen her in three different constellations and she worked in all three wonderfully).

Friends in high places.
A couple of years ago, I wrote a few paragraphs of a novel that I plan to finish some day. A retelling of La Sylphide with James (being female in my version, James is a nickname) as a mentally ill lesbian who abandons her stable life with her girlfriend Effy (and is therefore later left by Effy for Gurn) to chase the air-like Sylph, a figment of her imagination and the embodiment of her own collapsing state of mind. Today I took a picture of these few lines I’d written and posted them to Instagram. Now, Kizzy Matiakis of the RDB has liked the post and I don’t know whether to be super proud or kind of freaked. Argh. It’s surprisingly difficult when your idols are following you on the social media. Not that I’m complaining…
