idk why i even bother to be surprised or disappointed at how Byler turned out, obviously a show that’s mainstream, written by two straight dudes and produced by netflix would Klance us literally what did we expect? good writing? I could go ON AND ON AND ON about how shitty EVERYTHING (not just byler) in this volume was. Half of the characters were just cardboard cut outs of themselves, the Hopper/Eleven storyline was boring as shit and Joyce pmo. Rovickie, Lumax and Jancy were the only characters I liked/cared about this volume.
Back to Byler tho, I can’t even be mad or argue with Milevens when they rub it in our faces cuz like, yeah, we lost. We lost and theres not much more to say about that. This is just one more added to the long long list of queerbait and theres rlly not much to get all up and arms about. What rlly gets me tho is now looking back on all the interviews on both the cast and the Duffers (more so the cast) where they mention Byler or the painting and they laugh or joke about it, it rlly js carved out a pit in my stomach cuz i can’t help but feel mocked. I cant help but feel mocked because honestly i AM being mocked. They saw a bunch of queer people rooting for representation in a mainstream show, a mainstream show that isnt targeted specifically to queer people and thought “wow that’s fucking hilarious, that’ll clearly never happen and the fact that people are so invested in it is hilarious.” and when u look back on the interviews with that lens it’s just more of a punch to the gut. I’m not claiming any of the cast or crew r homophobic, that’s just how it comes off. If they didn’t want Byler to be canon, they could’ve at least done us the courtesy of developing Rovickie ON SCREEN.
Honestly I understand them a little bit because looking at the Bylers that are still holding out hope for ep8 IS a little laugh-worthy. Guys, look at any of the new interviews with the Duffers or with Noah, it’s not gonna happen. Expect the expected. The painting is either never going to be addressed or be brushed off (or lead to a rejection scene), the big “Mike monologue” is going to be him telling El not to kill herself and let’s be real here, birthdaygate was probably just a genuine, honest to god, mistake. The fact we got our hopes up about the writing capability of the Duffers is laughable and in hindsight stupid as fuck, they are not “writing geniuses” theyre not “leaving clues in between the cracks”. If you’re thinking to yourself “no obviously Byler is gonna be canon cuz why would they leave [x] or [y] unexplained? who would do that? that’d be terrible writing.” They would, they would do that and it IS terrible writing. This isnt to say that you’re not justified in feeling angry, feel angry. You are in EVERY RIGHT to feel angry, You got baited, you got klanced. i’m more of disappointed in myself for getting my hopes up.
“We asked Finn to carry a lot of the emotional weight this season.” Right ok so clearly he said no.
All of that being said, i’m looking forward to the Byler time skip ao3 fics where Mike is 30-40yrs old and miserable and Good Luck Babe is playing in the background. Theres at least SOME silver lining here, it’s just kinda pathetic that the silver lining to someone’s writing is only so it can be fuel to someone else’s better writing. big yikes.
