GOetry - An Arrangement in Thailand
For the fifth week of the GOetry world tour, we're heading to Thailand! But before we dive into this week’s poetic form, let’s take a journey through this breathtaking country.
Stroll through the bustling streets of Bangkok, where golden temples gleam in the sunlight and find our dearest angel and demon trying out the delicious street foods. Marvel at the intricate beauty of Wat Arun before we journey north to Chiang Mai, where ancient temples sit nestled among misty mountains. Then we head south to swim in the turquoise waters of the Andaman Sea, where white-sand beaches stretch for miles.
Thailand is a land of rich culture, deep spirituality, and vibrant traditions. Part of that tradition is Klon poetry. So, let us find a riverside café, sip on a refreshing glass of Thai iced tea, and let’s explore this week’s prompt!
This Week’s Prompt:
Form: Klon
Theme: Arrangement
What is a Klon?
The Klon (meaning simple verse) is sometimes known as the "true Thai poetic form". It is the basic and most common Thai verse written with simple subjects and simple words, but with a very complicated rhyme scheme. The tone is looser than most Thai forms but the end syllable of each line is usually rising which is in sync with most Western verse in iambic meter. It can be written in multiple stanza.
How to Write a Klon:
The Klon has a complicated rhyming scheme that is language specific, making the internal rhyme difficult for English writers. Consider the rhyming scheme optional this week but make sure to stick to quatrains of eight syllables.
Optional challenging rhyming scheme:
x x a x a x a b
x x b x b x x c
x x x x x x x c
x x c x c x x d
x x d x d x a e
x x e x e x x f
x x x x x x x f
x x f x f x x g
Example:
Rocking Out by Judi van Gorder
It's the beat repeating, heating
up the singing, tingling, cool sounds
that rock my mute world and rebounds
off the ground, no frowns, just big smiles.
Post your results here on Tumblr with the #GOetry and don't forget to tag me @isiaiowin so I can see your work, or add them to the GOetry collection on AO3!
Have fun! ~Moon 💚
