SHIPGIRL APPRECIATION DAY - Mainz

Mainz, a cousin or half sister of the Admiral Hipper-class heavy cruisers. Technically a light cruiser, she could be seen as an intermidiate between Light and Heavy cruisers, for her calliber is 152mm yet her armor is mostly that of a heavy cruiser. Mainz, the light cruiser that once dominated the meta until Plymouth came, yet nobody pays attention to.

This tortures her. It is her crux, to be forgotten. Dilligent and orderly, Mainz may be one of the few Ironblood shipgirls sane of mind, which doesn't mean she doesn't have her own issues. That, she has plenty of. No, Mainz doesn't hate herself the same way Monarch does. She is aware of her much needed role within the Ironblood, as a powerful light cruiser with enough skill to take command of whole missions. She is aware of her position within the Ironblood, of the trust Friedrich has on her, of her friendships with Brünhilde or Ägir, of the fact Eugen envies her - even if she has no idea why anybody would envy her. Although to be frank, Eugen is another whole can of worms that needs a very deep dive in the future.

Mainz knows people depend on her. She just can't understand why.

She wasn't there during the Great War - neither was Friedrich, but that won't persuade her. She wasn't there during the sinking of Bismarck. She wasn't there during the inauguration of the Crimson Axis, nor the important meetings that were had between Akagi, Friedrich, and others. No, she was brought into existence to fill their fleets. A discarded design. A less practical alternative to the M-class - to Regensburg and Magdeburg (who apparently existed in this reality, as they are gacha units). Even if she is aware of her place, she can't fathom why she was the chosen one.

So to fill this void in her life, she picked up coffee as a nice little hobby. At first she wasn't that much of an enthusiast. Coffee was whatever, a nice drink, but it stopped at that - a nice drink. However, after someone complimented her brewing skills, she started to focus more into it, to pour - pun intended - more of her essence into coffee brewing. She could become the girl everyone turned to for coffee advice, as trivial as the subject may be, but that would fill the void of purpose she always felt.

And so the Mainz we know and love was born. Coffee accidentally became her whole personality, a hobby turned unofficial profession. Dunkerque loves her coffee, and Mainz loves Dunkerque's pastries, so they tried to run a coffee shop for a while. Kuybyshev loves pure black coffee in the morning, so she got close to Mainz - so much so they now share a bed. And even then, she still struggles to see why people care about her.
