Rowing out and tension issues

So, ive been working on the 100 bag by Woolen Cottage to use up some scrap acrylic as well as practicing tension and honestly it has not gone well so far.

The pattern is pretty vague but its a very straightforward concept. First I cast on the wrong number of stitches but i just went with it. I hate the provisional cast on reccomended and am dreading the kitchener stitch to close the bottom. And my straps look super wonky so far (possibly not long enough either?):

The fabric texture so clearly changes when i start knitting flat and it is really bugging me!!

So I watched a bunch of YouTube videos on rowing out which mostly boiled down to "its a tension issue, you'll figure it out in time." So frustrating lol. But then i found this awesome video:

And it seems to be going super well so far! This makes me feel a lot more confident about knitting flat.

Also, the straps have some kind of edging (maybe someone could tell me if theres a name for it) that seems to be intended to keep the edges from rolling in, but it doesnt really accomplish that. Maybe its more of a reinforcement stitch? Hope someone here knows!

Overall its a pretty scrappy messy looking thing. I'm really excited to finish it so I can start working on something more interesting and use it as a project bag!
