When the perfect solution isn't available, improvisation is the key! . I'm really enjoying learning how to do different kinds of knitting projects, but I definitely don't have all the necessary equipment yet. For my current project I apparently needed stitch markers, but I find that paper clips seem to work just as well! . Improvisation is a fun concept in archaeology, especially in artefact analysis. A common assumption is that people in the past used a particular took only for one particular task, and only used a specialised and perfectly crafted tool. But if you really think about it, this was probably not the case. . How many times do you use the end of a knife when you can't find a screwdriver, or use a random stick when the chain comes off your bike? Humans are innovative creatures, and we can improvise with whatever objects we have to hand if we really need to. Why would it have been any different in the past? . Remember, people in the past were not perfect robots, always working within an expertly designed and specialised world. We in the modern world have gone through industrialisation and even we are not like that, so why would prehistoric people?
