Listen. this is just a fun little music review for my own entertainment. I’m just yapping here. it’s not that serious.

I will be using screenshots of the lyrics from geniuslyrics in order to explain my points. sticking it under a cut!

this is the best song on the new release. I'm starting with that because it's true. I have listened to it for well over two hours at this point. and I'm going to stake myself on saying that it's the best because it feels genuine and I can connect with it on an emotional level that I just can't reach with most of the other stuff from the release.

I don't think there's really much to critique here. my nitpick is that I would stick with "falling" instead of "fallin" because that's a cleaner rhyme with "morning" and the near-rhyme of believe/repeat kind of needs that.

this chorus is the best-constructed piece of music in the entire release. it has a very classic heartbreak song melody, sad with a slower tempo, that matches with the lyrics perfectly. seriously, that exact set of notes and that exact set of words were made for each other. the underlined bit is my favorite, it's very clean and simplistically evocative. I was debating with myself back and forth before I looked up the lyrics whether or not "life" was repeated; I had settled on it being unusual to repeat a word like that and assumed it was "light" the second time. I'll giving that one a *shrug* and a pass because it confuses me as to why that choice was made, but it doesn't actively grate on my nerves

very similar to the first verse in terms of structure. her/picture is not the worst rhyme I've ever heard, and I think it balances the near-rhyme of need/dreams pretty well. also, there's this little guitar bit that plays after the first line that I really love, it's so sad-sounding and it just builds the emotional sense that you get from the song as a whole.

here is where I shall nitpick: "one eye open, one over your shoulder" doesn't come across quite right. you can't have an eye over your shoulder if it isn't open, but the way those phrases are structured suggests that they are not talking about the same eye. It's maybe a lateral move in terms of sound, but "both eyes open, one over your shoulder" is what I would suggest. I do, however, like the turn of phrase in the second line, because it's not saying to keep friends close and enemies closer like the cliche. it's saying your friends are close to you, but your enemies are closer in the sense of not realizing someone you care about (like an ex-boyfriend in this case) is going to betray you. I like the reinvention of that concept.

there's nothing further to discuss with this song, because it's solid and simple. there aren't a thousand different sections, it focuses more on a good construction and delivery of the necessities. I'm not mad at that.

overall, for sound: Know Somebody is a 10/10. I <3 everything about the vibe this song constructs with the melody, the background, all of it. it makes me feel something.

overall, for lyrics: Know Somebody is a 9/10. there are a few small problems I have with it, but generally it's pretty good in terms of lyricism. and best of all, it feels genuine, which makes the lyrics by nature more compelling.

so it averages out to a 9.5. like I said, this is my favorite, and I have good taste, so of course it's the highest-rated one I've reviewed so far. it's the only song from the release I felt compelled to listen to on repeat for a sickening amount of time. kudos to Ava for creating this.
