The Big Picture
His early years were golden. He remembers them fondly and while it is possible that he views that time through rose-coloured glasses, there is no doubt that his early years were stable. He had two loving parents who doted upon him and a sister who meant the world to him. She was adopted by the family just a few years after he was born so they were about the same age. She may not have been blood but she was family and he adored his sister and she loved him right back. They spent a great deal of time together.
When he was in his early teens, these golden years slipped away as if they never existed. Perhaps they didn’t. He really isn’t sure anymore how much he remembers and whether any of it is actually true. His mother was arrested for defrauding her workplace. Gambling addiction. He honestly had no idea. Not surprising really as he was a fairly typically self-involved child at the time. However, even his father seemed blindsided. Apparently his mom was sneaking out of work early, rewriting the books (as she worked in accounts) and then going to the Casino. The descent was quick and brutal. Within a few short years, he was living with his grandparents while his sister was living with an aunt and uncle on the other side of the country.
Rufus became an angry and defiant kid, unwilling to bend to the rules, enraged that his parents could fuck up his life like this. He missed his parents and he missed his sister but instead of cry, he raged. He partied, he broke the rules, he snuck out, and he defied his grandparents in every way. He wasn’t violent but he was angry and miserable. Eventually they shipped him off to a boarding school for troubled teens in the United States.
He played along just enough to get them to drop their guard and then he just ... vanished. Disappeared to Santa Ysabel and never saw any of his family again. A horrifying idea perhaps but since they had turned on him, he turned his back on them. He has no idea what happened to them.
In a strange way, coming to Santa Ysabel saved him. He got a job and he worked hard. He was a dealer at first. He was good at chatting people up. People liked him, even if he was a bit of a grump at times. Then he started helping out in the lab. When the boss found out he had a knack for it, they forged some high school transcripts and sent him to College. He had to work hard then, learning three times as much as anyone else just to keep up. But he did it. The rule was that you had to come back to work for the company.
Jones Pharmaceuticals. What a bullshit name. They had huge grow operations, brought in cocaine, heroin, designer pharmaceuticals. If it didn’t exist then they invented it. It was fucking brilliant. The head of the company scares the fuck out of him so he stays well out of his way. Right now, Rufus is saving up to buy his own place. He’s part of Santa Ysabel now and he wouldn’t choose to live anywhere else.
