Knowledge (dungoneering) or (nature) DC16: Will-o’-wisps (also called will-o'-the-wisps) are floating balls of living, spongy air that glow softly yellow, white, green, or blue. They are easily mistaken for lanterns, especially in the foggy marshes and swamps where they reside. Evil and capricious, they enjoy luring travelers to untimely deaths in mires or at the hungry jaws of predators. They can be very dangerous if forced into direct confrontation, so the safest way to handle them is simply to avoid them and find one's own path.

The Sludge is thick, black, goopy liquer, said to be made from "black pudding" oozes. Intensely strong and viscous, each shot of it affects the imbiber as much as 4 normal drinks. A shot typically costs about 8 gold pieces, making it relatively cheap for it strength among speciality spirits.

Knowledge (dungeoneering) or (local) DC16: Despite their size, reach, and natural grappling skill, otyughs are considered one of the more benign aberrations. Extremely stupid, they are only aggressive when hungry or threatened, generally content to live in and constantly eat refuse, offal, and filth. Intelligent subterranean beings sometimes coexist with otyughs, which they regard as convenient garbage disposals: they dump their refuse in the lair of the otyugh, which in turn refrains from attacking them. In larger towns and cities, these creatures often settle in sewers, moats, or garbage dumps, where they serve a similar function.

Knowledge (dungeoneering) or (psionics) DC25:

Illithids aren't sexually dimorphic, and reproduce via parasitic ceremorphosis. This process is a bodily change that occurs when an illithid tadpole reaches maturity and is inserted into the brain of a humanoid host, usually a human. The tadpole eats away the victim's brain matter while growing to replace the brain, erasing all of the subject's personality and memory, but leaving the physical body alive and under the tadpole's control. After this, morphological transformations begin to occur to the body, driven by alien hormones excreted by the new tadpole ‘brain’, and over the course of a week it becomes a new illithid.

Despite their lack of biological sex, illithids do have binary gender constructs. Humanoids tend to refer to them as male and female, but these are inaccurate frameworks to describe the true strangeness of mindflayer gender identity, which is completely different from that of other races in often unexpected ways.

Languages, Part 10 (OOC)

The following are some of the languages spoken in the world of Greyhawk. They can be learned with the Speak Language skill, though exceptions may apply where noted. Unless your character speaks a particular language, assume that knowledge or recognition of it is OOC information.

Gnome: the racial language of gnomes, it is written with the runic Dwarven script, though often in a more whimsical style. It is renowned for its technical and legal treatises, and catalogues of knowledge about the natural world. Many human herbalists, naturalists, barristers, and engineers learn Gnome in order to read the best books about their field of study.

Goblin: the racial language of goblinoids, including goblins, hobgoblins, and bugbears. It is written using the runic Dwarven script, though often in a cruder style--when it is written at all, for few such creatures have the patience or interest to learn their letters. It frequently uses harsh, guttural sounds, especially “r,” “g,” and “k.”

Gol-Kaa: the racial language of goliaths, a race of massive, stony-skinned nomads. For millennia, goliaths only had a spoken tongue, Gol-Kaa, which has only thirteen phonetic elements: a, e, g, i, k, l, m, n, o, p, u, th, and v. Around the tenth century CY, goliaths picked up the runic alphabet of the Dwarven language, though the concept of a written language still hasn't spread to all the tribes yet. Those tribes that have learned the Dwarven alphabet have transcribed much of their vast oral tradition into carvings, cave paintings, and even books. Goliaths are rarely seen outside their tribes, though resources on their language can be found in larger cities.

Grell: the racial language of grells, fearsome carnivores that look like giant brains with a vicious beak and 10 dangling tentacles, each 6 feet long. Grell have a weird language composed of bird-like squawks and chirps, combined with tentacular motion and a limited telepathy with other grell. Other creatures cannot learn the grell language, and they would not deign to learn the language of "lesser beings" (a synonym for "food" in their language).

Languages, Part 5 (OOC)

Darfellan: the racial language of darfellan, a race of amphibious orca-like humanoids who were nearly driven to extinction by sahuagin. It has many compound and multisyllabic words, so it can take a long time to say something. A mix of aggressive consonants, long vowels, and clicks gives the Darfellan tongue an animated, heavily enunciated quality. Darfellan are rare even in coastal regions; outside of these, their language may not be learned without tracking down a native speaker.

Demodand: the racial language of demodands, a race of varied and terrible fiends native to the Tarterian Depths of Carceri (one of the outer planes). As their race is much less populous than devils or demons, the demodand language is less commonly learned, but may still be picked up with studious effort.

Desmodu: the racial language of desmodus, a race of bat-like nonflying humanoids that live deep underground. Desmodu includes both ultrasonic and subsonic utterances, so even fluent non-desmodus cannot speak or fully understand it when listening, though they can still read and write the written form. Desmodus are so rarely encountered that they were thought to be extinct by the surface world for many centuries, so their language may not be learned without tracking down a literate native speaker.

Diabolan: the racial language of diaboli, a race of hideous and extremely chaotic extraplanar humanoids. Diabolan words make frequent use of harsh, guttural hisses and the unique physiologic structure of the diaboli's forked tongue. While not difficult to learn, most humanoids of the Material Plane find mastery of spoken Diabolan impossible; though yuan-ti often take quite naturally to it. Most words in Diabolan contain soft "f" "s," "th," and "z" sounds. Diaboli are rare on the Material Plane, where their language may not be learned without tracking down a native speaker.
