Greek War of Independence Battles Brought to Life Through Playmobil Toys

Key events from the 1821 Greek War of Independence have now been recreated with plastic Playmobil figurines and accessories within dioramas. The colorful recreations were shown in an exhibition which opened on Tuesday at the National Historical Museum in Athens.

Laskarina Bouboulina – the first female in the world to be posthumously named an admiral for her services in the war – as well as Greek Generals Theodoros Kolokotronis and Markos Botsaris, are faithfully depicted in the new figurines.

Kolokotronis and Boutsaris were pre-eminent leaders of the Greek War of Independence against the Ottoman Empire, and members of the Filiki Eteria, the secret organization founded in 1814 in Odessa, whose purpose was to overthrow the Ottoman rule of Greece and establish an independent Greek state.

These are only some of the personalities and scenes depicted in more than 20 fascinating Playmobil dioramas and beautifully-realized 3D scenery exhibited there. See also video here: https://youtu.be/YQAwfrc2f8E

Beautiful illustration by Severino Baraldi, capturing a very moving scene of modern Greek history. Abandoned by his men, Theodoros Kolokotronis (Θεόδωρος Κολοκοτρώνης), Greek patriot and war leader of the Greek War of Independence from the Ottomans (1821) stopped at a small church dedicated to the Virgin Mary in Chrysovitsi,Arcadia,and,in tears, he prayed with these words: “Holy Mother,help this time too the Greeks to find their courage”( “Παναγία μου, βοήθησε και τούτη τη φορά τους Έλληνες να ψυχωθούν”).

Theodoros Kolokotronis: Ultimate Symbol of the Greek Revolution

Theodoros Kolokotronis, who lived from April 3, 1770 to Feb. 4, 1843, is undoubtedly the ultimate symbol of the Greek War of Independence, which took place from 1821 to 1830. More than any other individual, he is the man who completely embodied the battle cry “Liberty or Death”.

Kolokotronis was born at Ramavouni in Messenia to a family who had rebellion in their blood. He grew up in Arcadia in the central Peloponnese. The Kolokotronis clan was well-known, powerful and respected in the Arcadia region in the eighteenth century.

The family had found itself in a state of constant war with their Ottoman overlords since the sixteenth century. From 1762 to 1806, seventy members of the greater Kolokotronis clan were slain in clashes with the conquerors.
