Isolated from society, her only friends became the staff and her homeschooling teachers. Sharon grew up hating her life and instead sought comfort in her great aunt's stories. She loved hearing about the war and how a woman like her could go on such great adventures. Most of all, she would always be interested in hearing about the heroes who fought with her. Her great aunt had been an ally to Captain America himself! Hearing of such adventures and heroic actions, Sharon's interest in helping people and doing more than what was considered her "birth right" grew as years passed.
When she was in her teens, she enrolled in a cadet academy with the help of her aunt, much to the chagrin of her parents. Knowing they would disapprove of this, Sharon bargained with her parents, she would inherit the family business when she graduated and turned 18 if they allowed her to do this. It was a hard bargain but Sharon graduated as the top of her class in the academy, being scouted by a covert organization after her graduation to join as their secret agent. Knowing this was her only chance to follow in her great aunt's footsteps, she took the offer, attempting to juggle her business training and work as an agent. Things weren't easy and in the end she had to make a choice, choosing to continue as an agent. Having lost her mother when she was young, she was raised by her now single father, a police captain who worked hard at his job and struggled to juggle his work hours with raising his daughter. Not having her father around as much, Gwen had a sense of independence and freedom, taking an interest in the arts. Her father however, tried to create a disciplined household, wanting his daughter to do well in her studies and get into a good college. Gwen however, wanted to be a musician and her dreams and ideals often were a clashing point for the family. It wasn't until the death of one of her closest friends that she began to take her school life more seriously, gaining an interest in science. By the time she was in high school, she was the top of her class and had earned an internship with a well known company who focused on biology and technical enhancements with the aid of her friend, who happened to be well acquainted with the CEO.
It was around the time that she turned 16 that she was helping her supervisor study rare spiders and their DNA that she was bitten by one when it escaped its tank. Afraid that the bite might be poisonous, she worked on a serum that would help counteract whatever side effects may come from the bite, injecting herself with it. Unbeknownst to her, this would cause her dna to mutate and merge with the spider's DNA giving her powers similar to an arachnid's. Having known what they do to people with powers due to her father's job, Gwen became withdrawn, wanting to keep herself hidden as to not raise her father's suspicion. When she turned 18, she went to a college that offered single room dorms, living there while also still interning in hopes of finding a cure. As the years passed by, she began to grow into her powers a little more and decided to stop searching for a cure, instead, focusing on trying to keep herself concealed while also learning the extent of her abilities. After two years of college dorminG, Gwen moved into an apartment she could call her own in the Kosmo building.
