IMDB Trivia for “Sleepless”
- First appearance of Alex Krycek, played by Nicholas Lea. Lea assumed a different role earlier in the series, in Gender Bender (1994).
- The last scene contains a hidden clue about Scully's next destiny when Krycek meets the Syndicate and tells them that she is a bigger problem than they had told him.
- While performing an autopsy, Scully receives a phone call from Mulder who states that his name is "George Hale". George Hale was the visionary behind the Palomar Observatory in California. Mulder explained this to Scully in the past episode Little Green Men (1994), where he also used it as an alias for his flight to Puerto Rico.
- First on-screen appearance of "Mr X".
- The character "X" was originally intended to be a woman; Natalija Nogulich even filmed a scene in the role, but she was recast with Steven Williams.
- This is Howard Gordon's first solo writing effort for the series. Gordon was inspired to write the episode following a two-week bout of insomnia.
- When Mulder is talking to Scully on the phone he mentions soldiers walking through mushroom clouds. This is an actual occurrence - Operation Desert Rock from 1951 to 1957 affected civilians and soldiers, both knowingly and unknowingly.
- The quote uttered by the Preacher, "Augustus Cole" (Tony Todd), "He retains not his anger forever because He delights in mercy. He will turn again. He will have compassion on us", is from the Old Testament: Micah 7:18,19.
- As with Conduit and Beyond the Sea, we have an utterance towards of end of "I want to believe".
- Tony Todd plays the role of of Cole, who is a Vietnam Vet. This isn't the first time he has played a soldier who also struggled with guilt over illegal killings during this war. He also played in Platoon.
- Approximately at 08:45, a red Jeep Cherokee passes by the Grissom Sleep Disorder Center. This car is exactly the same as the one Frank Black drives in Millennium (1996).
- At the supposed New York train station scene, the railcars are a part of VIA Canada's fleet, notably Car #8333, the "Lorne Manor."
- As in Blood (1994), towards the end, Mulder points his gun at an armed man who asked him to shoot him so he can be freed from his anguishes.
