KIMITAKE ENATSU — 🔥

I will win! I will be the one to beat Shoyo Hinata!”

Enatsu Kimitake (Japanese: 江夏紀卓, ‘Kimitake Enatsu’) was a first year student of Kumano High. Introduced as Hinata and Kageyama’s rival, and as Kumano’s starting setter in replacement of Ohara Amaya. His number on his jersey is #11

Appearance

Enatsu has a muscular build, in which he contains by: ‘working out till his eyes watered’. He has short, red-orangish hair with a portion of his bangs swooping between his eyes, with a few strands sticking out in a slight swoop, whilst also having a messy ahoge sticking out in the back of his head. He has short thick eyebrows and sharp, dark brown, determined eyes.

He usually wears a smug grin on his face, occasionally biting his tongue between his teeth whenever he’s focused.

Personality

Enatsu has a fiery temper and stubborn determination. He is never one to back down. He tends to challenge people and come off as #1. An example of that was during an argument between the team's captain, Hasegawa Ryo. Even after being told multiple times he was banned from attending any volleyball practice, he still came by the gym. He would pick a fight if they ever tried to kick him out— nonetheless they were successful, he would be found bumping a ball outside in the field in front of the gym.

He has no tolerance for disrespect, or any criticizing comment towards his skills. As shown during an argument between first year wing spiker: Kajihara Yasu. When Yasu critiques his skills in a harsh manner, Enatsu is quick to snap back by grabbing him by the collar and yelling. If the situation allows it to bubble further (in which it does), Enatsu is quick to throw a punch or two.

Though, after the whole quarrel between Kajihara and the team, Enatsu takes the time to reflect. Which to him, was rare. He felt bad, in a way. He wanted to apologize so he could play with the team again, since after the fight— he was permanently banned from ever attending volleyball practices. And this time, they were more stricter, especially after elbowing Kano Asami right in the nose while he was being pulled back by her.

During his ban, Enatsu spends the rest of the hours after school sitting on the stairs in front of the gym. Not playing volleyball, just sitting. Contemplating. Waiting. I was not until manager Kano Asami spots him outside. She joins him, sitting beside him— and from there they have a long, emotional conversation. Enatsu appears apologetic and honest with his feelings. He slightly hesitated a few times, but he had a feeling he could trust Asami with the information. Afterwards, he was quick to tell her to never tell anyone and help him apologize to the rest of the team.

Enatsu apologizes to Kajihara in his own crazy way, which can be explained in Kajihara's profile.

After those events, his behavior began to change a bit. He was still as cocky and confident as ever, but lately he tends to include his teammates whenever referring to games. For example, he used to always say: ‘I will win’, now he says: ‘We will win’, especially when referring to himself and Yasu. He appears to be especially challenged between Shoyo Hinata and Tobio Kageyama. During a practice match between Kumano and Karasuno, he was quick to drag himself and Yasu to coach—begging him to make them both play. He wanted to prove that Kajihara and himself have the better ‘chemistry’

Background

Enatsu attended Wakimizu Junior High. He is shown to not be as bad as he is today. He was more willing to comply with his team and adjust to their likings. Due to that, he was praised for his skills— communication and physical. And overtime, those words got to his head.

The last year of junior high, he was a lot more snappier. Whenever his teammates complained about his sets, he would tell them— “You just need to keep your skills up with mine”— and he can be seen holding onto that mindset till the start of his first year of Kumano High.

But after junior high and starting freshman year, after the fight between Yasu and the team, he was quick to change. He was a bit rough around the edges, but he has definitely improved mentally.

Relationships

1. Kajihara Yasu: Particularly close to Yasu. They tend to argue a few times, but it’s usually one sided. And most of the time it’s Yasu purposefully provoking Enatsu. But on the court, they do anything but argue. They are quick with complying and working together. Their relationship is particularly shown to contrast a few points between the relationship of: Shoyo Hinata and Tobio Kageyama

2. Miyamoto Kame: Both of them have a silent tolerance between one another. Miyamoto is a bit hesitant to talk with Enatsu, but Enatsu doesn’t notice— nor care. He focuses on getting his point across to Miyamoto, and not wasting on the idea of him ‘not wanting to be on the court’. Miyamoto is a bit intimidated by him, so he usually listens most of the time.

3. Ueno Haru: Enatsu forces Ueno to talk with him most of the time. Whether it be for a game or off the court. You could say that Enatsu finds Ueno ‘easy’, and tends to poke at him most of the time. But of course, he claims he's just joking, and there are times when he is shown to care about Ueno as much as he does with the rest of the first years.

4. Tsutsumi Michiko: Beside Kajihara, he tends to purposefully poke at Tsutsumi for fun. Which could hint his possible crush towards her. He tends to poke at her hair, physically and verbally, and always says things that would get her fired up. He is shown to find her reactions amusing to him.

5. Kano Asami: At the start, he doesn’t really tolerate her. He finds her unnecessarily loud and too much of a tryhard. But after a long talk with her on the stairs in front of the gym, he begins to respect her, while also being a little intimidated. He is the most impacted by Asami out of all the first years

6. Hasegawa Ryo: His relationship with the captain is quite messy. He definitely got on his nerves during their fight at the start of the year, and the time he kept going against his words of being banned from volleyball practices.

Karasuno V.S Kumano

During Kumano’s practice match against Karasuno— Enatsu was quick to pick a fight with first years: Shoyo Hinata and Tobio Kageyama, especially Kageyama. He finds Kageyama's sets to be absolutely perfect, which makes him envious.

When he tried to do these insane sets with his own team, he was quickly scolded by Asami for trying something he isn’t familiar with. Her message towards Enatsu manages to impact him greatly.

“You are NOT kageyama! So what are you thinking when you pull off those risky sets?! Because you’re intimidated? Because you expect to be better than he is? Sure! Kageyama is really talented. His sets are clean, his hits are frustratingly good, and his precision and accuracy is downright scary. But don’t you think you have qualities of your own that could also be considered ‘amazing’? You’re an awfully talented player, Enatsu. Hell, I’d say even better than most of the people on our team.. and I’m not just saying that to fill that fat ego of yours. You have talents of your own that I even wish I had—, so know how to use it. I know you’re smart, I know you know what to do— but do it in a way that will benefit the US and not THEM. WE are the ones on your team.”

“To be a good player is to communicate with your peers. You’re not in this fight alone, so stop acting like it. Okay? Show off those badass skills that scream— ‘Enatsu Kimitake’ and not ‘Tobio Kageyama’.”

From there, he can be seen playing more comfortably. In a way he is used to. Eventually taking a set from Karasuno.

SHIRTATORIZAWA V.S KUMANO

Throughout the majority of the match between Shiratorizawa during the Interhigh Preliminaries, Enatsu was benched. Simply because: “It’s too much of a risk for now”, as stated directly by Kano Asami. Enatsu uncharacteristically held his tongue, but he could be seen visibly tense after hearing that.

When he was switched in during the second set, Kumano was able to nearly steal a set from Shiratorizawa, but his attempts were completely shut down when Satori Tendo managed to shut down Kajihara Yasu’s attempts. After that, he managed to secure his position as the starting setter for the third set against Shiratorizawa, because Asami believed that if he continued playing in, they might be able to kick Shiratorizawa off the leaderboard.

Kumano inevitably lost despite their attempts. Losing 15 - 13

AOBA JOHSAI V.S KUMANO

There was a consistent switch in between the two setters: Ohara Amaya and Kimitake Enatsu. By now, Enatsu has clearly grown as a player– physically and mentally. Managing to work with his team other than the first years. At the beginning of the third set, Enatsu said to his team: “Keep me in the game, and I promise this set is ours.” That statement alone was able to convince Coach Okimoto and Asami to keep him in.

His performance against Aoba Johsai was no different to how he usually is, but his movements are more coordinated, thoughtful. But of course, around the ending of the whole match– when kumano believed they got Aoba Johsai cornered, Enatsu got over himself. Setting the ball a bit too quickly, or in directions that were borderline impossible to hit. His plays were impulsive, uncoordinated and confident.

At Kumano’s defeat against Aoba Johsai, the team was ready to head home after mourning their loss. But then, Enatsu begins to slowly tear up, which was unexpected. He starts off his dialogue with an apology, before continuing:

“I was being stupid! I got too confident, I got provoked too easily. My sets were uncoordinated and impulsive! And because of that, I cost us the last point.”

“I messed up on you guys’ chances in going to nationals. I should’ve asked you to switch me out before it was too late… But instead, I let my stupid pride get in the way again. I'm at fault for everything and I am so sorry."

It was sudden. For Enatsu to apologize like that, let alone cry. The whole team was caught off guard– Nicolas even questioned what he was apologizing for. Though, Asami was quick to process a response to his words. She wasn’t mad, she wasn’t upset. Rather, understanding.

“Yeah. It is your fault.”

“You were impulsive, arrogant. You were so caught up in making sure you set the ball fast enough to catch the other team off guard. But you need to realize, the players on your team can’t read your mind. Other than strategizing and considering the abilities and limits of the players on your own team, you focused on the expectations.”

“But in the end..”

“You learned something, right? You managed to suck up your own pride and end up admitting your faults. And honestly, I was a bit surprised. You’re growing, not just physically, but mentally too.”

“When I said our team is certain to go to nationals, I wasn’t talking about now. It could happen next year, or maybe even 10 years from now. “

“Mistakes do not lead you to the end, they are merely just bumpy rocks along the road. But not only that… they are also a lesson. What you mess up is what you can fix in the future. Don’t downplay or doubt your own skills because of this loss, instead, use it as a motive to pick your head up and improve. For yourself, and your team.”

Her words managed to bring Enatsu back into tears, and it was not long after Kajihara and Nicolas began teasing him for it.

Skills

Power: 4/5. Enatsu regularly works out. Always attending Hasegawa’s morning gym practices without fail. During matches, his setter dumps are strong. Loud enough to send a whole gym quiet for a few seconds

Speed: 3.5/5. He isn’t that fast, that's why he usually stretches his legs out whenever he wants to get from one point to the next.

Jump: 2/5. He doesn’t jump that high. He claims that it's because he puts all his strength in his arms and upper body. Asami advises him to work on his legs as much.

Technique: 3/5. He doesn’t have bad technique, mostly flawed due to his high expectations.

Stamina: 4/5. He has good stamina. And along with his unwavering determination, he can play on the court for 5 sets max.

Strategy: 3/5. Along with his technique, it's flawed because of his high expectations.

I’ve always wondered, what prefecture/city is Kumano in? (I can guess, based on context, that they located in the miyagi area, but I could be wrong)
