Kurt Hummel & Friendships [2]
Under Appreciated
Kurt & Finn:
Awkward, weird crushes and internalised homophobia aside, Kurt and Finn eventually did build quite a nice brotherly bond. It’s just a shame that it was somewhat forgotten/neglected after Burt and Carole’s wedding—we deserved more scenes of them just being goofy teenage brothers.
Some nice Kurt & Finn headcanons;
Kurt teaching Finn the ropes at the Garage.
Finn comforting Kurt whilst Rachel and Blaine go on a date.
Finn teaching Kurt to play video games.
Friday Family Dinner Night & Charades.
Kurt’s famous Murder Mystery Dinner Parties.
Finn doesn’t want to go because he thinks it will be lame, but Carole and Burt are really excited about it, and Carole forces Finn to attend.
Because Kurt’s invited Blaine by default, Finn manages to get Rachel an invite as well. Just to be fair, Sam (who is living with the Hudmels) gets to invite someone as well, thus he invites Mercedes.
Burt really does enjoy the Murder Mystery Dinners—especially now that there are more people who can join in.
Turns out the Murder Mystery Dinners are really fun.
Some scenes that should’ve taken place;
Kurt confronting Finn about outing Santana.
Arguing about laundry / Kurt playfully complaining about Finn’s lack of fashion sense.
Finn, Carole & Burt reacting to Kurt and Blaine dating.
(Finn meeting Blaine for the first time)
Klaine & Finchel double date.
Kurt’s S2 “Lady Chat” scenes.
An overlooked detail: when Kurt shows Burt, Finn and Blaine his prom outfit (2x20 “Prom Queen”), Finn is drinking a glass of milk—and Blaine once had the audacity to judge warm milk.
Kurt & Sam:
I actually prefer Sam’s friendship with Blaine, so I am not too fussed about the lack of Sam/Kurt scenes.
However, I would like to remind everyone that Sam lived with the Hudmels (aka Kurt) since his junior year! So they had plenty of time to bond and hang out.
I definitely think they built a bond as strong as brothers that they maintained for the rest of their lives. And of course, having lived together—and with Finn—I think their bond was a source of strength and comfort when Finn died.
Also Sam and Kurt do share a few under appreciated moments of friendship; when Sam stood up to Karofsky on Kurt’s behalf. And when Kurt donated some of his clothes to Sam and then kept his secret about being homeless.
(For more info on Sam’s relationship with the Hudmel brothers: Sam Evans & the Hudmel Household)
Side note: Kurt finally got his duet with Sam—albeit, quite small—in ‘Just The Way You Are’ (5x06 “Movin’ Out”). And to be honest, it sounded pretty great.
Kurt & Quinn:
Unfortunately, Kurt and Quinn only share one two dialogue scenes (1x11 “Hairography” & 3x14 “On My Way”), but they do share quite a few cute background scenes, and they always seem to be paired for dance numbers (especially in S1).
This friendship is mostly based on headcanon but I definitely think it was a missed opportunity.
Now for the crux of the headcanon; I think when Kurt’s mom died, Kurt became so depressed and withdrawn from his friends that his grades began to suffer, and thus he was held back a year*
*Admittedly, I am completely unfamiliar with the American schooling system, so I don’t know if this actually works but bear with me. Also, despite Chris Colfer being one of the youngest cast members, I do believe Kurt is one of the oldest OG New Directions, being born in 1993—this is literally the only evidence to support my headcanon. So… yeah.
Anyway, Quinn is the first person to befriend Kurt after his mom died, and they got along really well; playing dolls and tea parties and whatnot. However, everything changed once they got to high school. Quinn abandoned Kurt for the popular cliques and maybe her parents warned her way from him because he was a “bad influence” and they were slightly homophobic.
Maybe this is why Kurt is so passive-aggressive (why they are both so passive-aggressive) in their 1x11 scene; because she completely ghosted him. IDK, I just feel that his line;
“Why, hello Quinn. To what do I owe the honour? I do believe this is the first time you’ve ever spoken to me.” - Kurt
Is very dismissive and somewhat sarcastic. And its a well observed trait that Kurt deflects from his own problems through wit and humour.
And then Quinn’s follow up line; “I’m sorry about that.”
Is very simple. But it is an apology—maybe she regrets the end of their friendship? But the emphasis on the “that” could imply that they both know the real reason she was apologising. The entire scene is very layered and leaves a lot of room for interpretation and implication.
There was another missed opportunity in S3 for the development of Kurt and Quinn’s friendship. Instead of the stupid Quinn/Shelby storyline and the plot to steal back Beth, maybe Kurt is the one to comfort Quinn about her obvious mental breakdown? He could offer some genuine perspective and advice, or at the very least a shoulder to cry on. And their friendship could have been sealed with an awesome makeover (a nice callback to their 1x11 convo).
Although… Skank!Quinn was pretty hot.
Overall, I think Quinn could’ve found an equal in Kurt, because he is witty, introverted and wise beyond his years. And they could’ve bonded over their mutual dislike of Mr Schue and Rachel.
Kurt & Adam:
It’s very unclear in canon, but I believe that the romance just fizzled out for Kurt and Adam (also, Kurt was obviously distracted/emotionally invested in someone else even though he didn’t want to admit it at the time). Unfortunately—and contrary to some fanfiction—I don’t think Kurt and Adam stayed on friendly terms, considering Kurt got kicked out of Adam’s Apples. The best I can hope for is that it was a mature and mutual breakup, and they were thereafter amicable towards each other but not friendly.
Kurt’s quite an introverted person, so I think it’s amazing that he is wanting to branch out and meet new people at NYADA (unlike a certain someone *cough* Rachel *cough*).
Unfortunately, Adam’s whole storyline is very under-baked and no one really took him seriously as a potential love interest for Kurt. However, it would have been nice and an interesting storyline had Kurt and Adam stayed on friendly terms, and it would have been an interesting juxtapose to the over-dramatic breakups common to High School, and particularly the Glee Club. Also; missed opportunity in how Blaine might’ve reacted to Adam had they ever met, considering they went to the same school.
TL;DR: Kurt, Finn and Sam = underdeveloped friendships.
Kurt, Quinn & Adam = wasted friendship potential.
