Flashframe is pleased to announce we have acquired our first film from South Africa and will be including Shebeen Queen directed by Carl Houston Mc Millan at our next event. So you maybe thinking what is a Shebeen Queen? In South Africa shebeens exist on every corner of the township, many of these shebeens are unlicensed drinking spots.Shebeens serve as an important aspect to township life and the working class, They are communial lounges that attract a lot of different characters. Running a shebeen requires a strong character, which are usually woman, known as shebeen queens. The film follows an eccentric young chicken vendor who is lead by his conscious who attempting to motivate him, trying to break his shy shell, giving him strength to approach his crush. Set in a noisy disruptive drunken shebeen, we are introduced to the mad characters as well as their hidden personas.
The film will be introduced by a special video introduction from the director and we are in talks of a possible video Q+A to be played after the screening.
