Kyrsten Sinema began her political life as a Green Party activist and antiwar protester in Arizona, a figure of the genuine left who ridiculed centrist Democrats of the Joe Lieberman variety as sellouts and worked the grassroots on climate and poverty, and the franchise. As recently as 2014, she was telling the public, in writing, that raising the minimum wage was a no-brainer, that a full-time worker earning the minimum could not clear sixteen thousand dollars a year, that the case was closed. The distance between that woman and the senator she became is the widest arc on this Registry, and the arc is the reason she is on it.

Kyrsten Sinema is getting paid to push for a Chandler data center

When the ex-senator threatened Chandler over a data center, she was working as a paid lobbyist. She might suck at it.

When Sinema left office, scared out of running for reelection by now-Sen. Ruben Gallego, she quickly completed her heel turn and joined the powerful lobbying firm Hogan Lovells. The website law.com reports that Hogan Lovells is ranked the seventh-largest law firm in the U.S., with more than $2.9 billion in gross revenue in 2024. The firm also hired her chief of staff, Daniel Winkler, as a “policy advisor.”

Thumbs down: Chandler kills Sinema-backed data center in 7-0 vote

Sinema lobbied hard for the data center, but her involvement created exactly the opposition she tried to sweeping away.

In public appearances before the council and the city’s planning and zoning commission, she added an ominous threat: If Chandler didn’t get with the program, the Trump administration would compel the city to accept the 422,877-square-foot, energy-guzzling data center anyway. Sinema’s condescending tone in her public appearances galvanized opposition to the project, setting off a wave of anti-data center and anti-Sinema emails to the city council. This month, reporting by Phoenix New Times revealed the extent of Sinema’s hard sell and the “unknown” water costs of the proposed six-building development.

The final nail came Thursday night, as residents packed a city council meeting to watch the data center go down in flames in a 7-0 vote. Sinema was nowhere to be found.

Going all-out to ensure that private equity parasites pay much lower taxes on their income than ordinary wage workers doesn’t make a lot of sense if your primary goal is doing good policy as a Democratic legislator or getting re-elected in a swing state. If you’re interested in getting a whole lot of money to do not a whole lot of work, though, it’s a winning move.
