I would love to know the info about Stewart Lee and Richard Herring’s relationship today, I’ve read on Reddit a mixed amount but I would love to know more information
okay this might be a little long as there is a LOT going on with them & i would like to write it all down as i like Studying People. and they especially are so interesting. As u have probably read on reddit it is a very messy and confusing thing they have going on
- i will just say first that the one actually serious incident that does sort of point to them GENUINELY not liking each other is that when Rich got cancer stew did not reach out to him about it at alllll. And as much as i am a huge fan i can't defend that sorry💀 That is pretty bad imo... not really any way you can frame that well.
NOW into less serious stuff - You also mentioned reading about them fighting in the 90s which DID happen but from what I've seen about it it seems to be more of a petty argument that ended with a stupid slap fight rather than an ACTUAL fight. I think there was a blog post(?) or something by Herring that I saw that talked about this fight and he described it as not being that serious, but I can't find it right now😖 It was some little disagreement about computers from what i remember. They did also apparently argue a fair bit in the double act times so I think that was probably just a result of that rather than any big incident...
The thing that most people do cite as a reason for them hating each other are the constant little shots at each other in their standup. This is verrrry long running. a lot of genuinely fairly mean stuff about each others work and personalities. People do sort of exaggerate that it's 'stew hates rich' when in reality herring has also been pretty nasty about him at times so i'd say they're probably equal on that. Though its debatable whether these are actual digs or just running jokes ESPECIALLY since both of them do somewhat play up characters that are very arrogant in their standup so this does go into a bit of a grey area where its hard to tell if the comments are meant or not.
I don't think they like each other much anymore but i definitely don't think they HATE each other :
The article i posted before (some screenshots above) about their thoughts on each other from the 2000s has a lot of love in it as well as criticisms so I think they (at least at that point 💀) still liked each other. They seemed to have a really close friendship in the 90s / 2000s so it's a shame that that isn't really the case anymore! those screenshots particularly are very sweet & its nice to read such nice thoughts about each other.
Their 'falling out' as much as i can gather was more of a gradual thing. Different interests and both sort of wanted to pursue their own stand up so naturally they did go their own directions which makes sense. There is maybe a bit of resentment there from both for each others successes & failures..... I would say its quite nuanced as of now. They probably don't HATE each other but i think there's a little bitterness on both sides for different reasons. A love-hate relationship ❤️ bit of a doomed yaoi situation lmaoo
