David Bowie, Depeche Mode & “Heroes”

So we used to rehearse once a week at a youth centre, that’s what they’re called. And Dave came along for some reason, to one of our rehearsal sessions. And I think Vince must have asked him, “Are you interested in joining a band?” And we did an impromptu audition, and he actually sang “Heroes” by David Bowie. © Martin L. Where I came from, you were pretty much told, “You’re not going anywhere in life.” Seeing Ziggy on Top Of The Pops, I found that I could escape. Later, Low, Station To Station and “Heroes” really carried me through. I said to myself, I’d follow that voice anywhere, even when its takes me down. Both he [Dave] and Martin Gore were devastated by the death of Bowie, he [Dave] says. "Martin was really shaken up. He doesn’t show a lot of emotion that way but he told me he didn’t sleep all night. So I told him we need to just write something, we need to express that, and he was like, ‘You’re right’. "Its that English thing, you hold back your emotions but when someone opens the door and says ‘We should say something’, you go, Yeah, of course we should”. © Dave Gahan (Mojo, 23/02/2016)

When we started rehearsing I brought up the idea of maybe doing a Bowie cover especially after losing him. Martin and I are both huge fans, and still are. So it just seemed right, Martin was into it. It’s got a real early Depeche flavour to it. © Dave Gahan (Classic Pop magazine  march 2017)

Bonus: Many people, including Robert Marlow and even Martin Gore now think that Dave Gahan actually went to Compostion Of Sound’s rehearsal room to sing  “Heroes” with them, but this quote from the Stephen Dalton interview should prove that it is not true. It is not exactly known in which room Martin Gore was, seeing as should have been rehearsing in both bands that night, but if he remembers watching Dave Gahan’s performance, then perhaps Martin was rehearsing with French Look. © DMLiveWiki
