Knuckles whiten against the steering wheel as Catherine does her best to remain vigilant, to keep her head as level as she possibly can. Theodora’s voice sent chills down her spine, their call confirming their worst fear: someone had attacked them--and by the broken timbre of their voice, Catherine knows it’s absolutely horrible.
I-I don’t know where I am for certain, they pitifully said, voice seemingly so far from the phone. But her sweetest Theodora, her brave mentor, managed to rattle off their surroundings and what street names could be seen in the darkness. And so, Catherine drives with reckless abandon. Her Maserati tears through Verona’s streets unforgivingly; the tire screech in protest at every sharp turn, at every abrupt start and stop--but she doesn’t care, she can’t care about that as long as Theodora is battered, broken, and alone.
Her stomach twists uncomfortably. Her heart is in her throat. The thought of losing Theodora nearly drives her to tears, despite the rage that bubbles underneath her fair skin. Another sharp turn followed by another; Catherine yanks the wheel to avoid crashing and, when she finally sees something that reminds her of Theo’s words--an area with poor lighting, abandoned buildings--she slows. “Fuck,” she whispers to herself, the fear of never finding her mentor beginning to set in.
It’s not until she catches the familiar glint of blood in her headlights that she feels a flare of shy hope.
She lets out a breath she didn’t know she was holding.
Catherine pulls her car to the side and parks. She feels the weight of the gun nestled against her hip even while sitting and, in her heart of hearts, she knows she’s not afraid to use it if it results in Theodora Moreau’s safety. Without wasting another moment, Catherine exits the vehicle and hesitantly starts towards the trail of blood. “Theo?” she calls worriedly. “Theodora, where are you?”
