Vámonos, borinqueños, vámonos ya, que nos espera ansiosa, ansiosa la libertad! I did this cover in honor of the National Puerto Rican Day Parade in New York City, which was on June 9th, 2019.  Many people have heard the anthem of Puerto Rico, La Borinqueña, which has lyrics about how beautiful the island is and about its ‘discovery’ by Columbus.  However, many people, including many of my fellow Puerto Ricans, have never heard the original lyrics which were written to inspire Puerto Ricans to revolt against the Spanish.  When the US stole Puerto Rico after the Spanish-American War, they deemed these lyrics too subversive to be the anthem and made them change it to something less confrontational.  You can read more about the original anthem here and see the FULL lyrics (I did a slightly shortened version): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/La_Borinque%C3%B1a I sing this song to remind Puerto Ricans of our revolutionary roots.  We must fight for independence from US imperialism and grow into the strong Puerto Rico that we can always be. DC's Heroes Are Teaming Up With La Borinqueña to Benefit Puerto Rico

Though Puerto Rico might no longer dominate the headlines the way it did in the days and weeks after last year’s hurricane season left at least 1,000 people dead, there are still countless more people on the island who are still fighting to piece their lives back together. In the spirit of rebuilding, comics creator Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez is partnering with DC Comics to bring his hero, La Borinqueña, together with members of the Justice League in Ricanstruction: Reminiscing & Rebuilding Puerto Rico.

Though Puerto Rico might no longer dominate the headlines the way it did in the days and weeks after last year’s hurricane season left at least 1,000 people dead, there are still countless more people on the island who are still fighting to piece their lives back together.  In the spirit of rebuilding, comics creator Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez is partnering with DC Comics to bring his hero, La Borinqueña, together with members of the Justice League in Ricanstruction: Reminiscing & Rebuilding Puerto Rico.

The comics anthology will feature stories from comics giants like Gail Simone, Greg Pak, and Reggie Hudlin along with newcomers like Gabby Rivera and actors like Rosario Dawson and Rubén Blades.

Each of the more the 100 stories contained within Ricanstruction will highlight a different aspect of Puerto Rican culture and history and 100 percent of the proceeds from sales from the anthology are being donated to outreach groups working to provide basic necessities like food and closing to those still on the island.

Preorders for Ricanstruction: Reminiscing & Rebuilding Puerto Rico are open today and the book hits comics stores nationwide on May 23.
