Quick Update
This is what I refer to as the “special” caterpillar. The final caterpillar to pupate had been on (and not eating) garlic mustard for a week. S/he pupated later than the others, and was the only one that fell during pupation. It put out the strings just like the others, but the strings couldn’t hold up to all of the wriggling and it fell (safely) to the ground to finish.
I’ve been quiet because of a recent field excursion for a class – I’ll be sending along updates to that over the next few weeks, as I get time. The quarter is wrapping up and I’ll be able to blog a little more about issues facing me, the butterfly, and the native mustards. Maybe, if I get bored of that, we’ll examine rarity across other species, and perhaps interesting caterpillars and other bugs. We shall see.
