Module 2: Lab

The case study for this week’s lab was Houdini. This week we were again split into groups discuss the case study looking at the important properties of protocols as well as to create a protocol where Houdini and his wife can talk to each other and prove that fake physic would be called out for fraud and a real physic would be known as real. 

Some notes taken during the discussion are below.

1. Important properties your protocol should have:

Levels of complexity 

Repeatability 

Nonce (uniqueness & randomisation)

Random Number 

Number used only once to tart & initialise a sequence of randomised numbers

e.g. cipher block chain (CBC)  [blocks of plain text & blocks of cipher text chained together to form a cipher]

Authentication

Integration

2. Give your protocol:

Encryption method (needs something from wife & Houdini needs to answer it), Physical aspect (Houdini’s Puzzle Box that the wife brings), Incorporate the medium 

2 layered encryption method (if one falls through, there’s another method that needs to be broken):

Encryption System: each sentence has 1st letter from a word below 

Name of medium

Colour of clothes of medium 

First word medium says 

Make the key space of your secret question really big

One Time Pads

Private/Public Keys: 

This discussion of the case study lead to the topic of Public/Private Keys. 

Encryption used today: public & private key sign-in 

Something encrypted with public key & can only be decrypted with private key (& vice-versa)

Private Key: only known to one person or one machine

Public Key: published everywhere i.e.ssh key on GitHub

Good for sending messages one way (people can access the public key)

Key signing - one directional

Given plain text & cipher text, (otp) just “xor” them together (requires an encryption algorithm)

Consider secret key & secret system

Research key sign-in (hw)

2 Factor Authentication (2FA): 

Something that you know (i.e. pin)

Something that you have (i.e. card)

Something that you are (i.e. you turning up with a passport, licence etc; DNA: fingerprints)

2FA: need two of the factors above

Multi-factor: need all 3 factors above 

Lots of applications/organisations have multiple layers but doesn’t have 2 separate factors
