Pen making and lacquer painting have strong connection to my calligraphy. I make my own writing tools, use them and sell them to penmen around the world. Lacquer painting takes forever, the last touch up process took me over 10 days. Eggshell and Ao-gai (blue shell & rose pearl shell) stand out perfectly on deep black layer. They are some best photos of upcoming pen holders. Abalone shells are incredibly shiny and beautiful. Lacquer painting is a patient process, which takes months to complete. The wood base itself is very challenging decision that I only figured out after making 2,000 pens. Refinement is timeless, I know I can do it better and better on the lathe. Then I painted the whole pen in order: raw lacquer, raw lacquer mixed with soil, brown lacquer and black lacquer; 2-3 layers each kind and let it harden in humid box for 24-48 hours each layer. I used quail eggshell, Abalone (blue glass, rose pearl and aqua green) and gold powder/gold leaf to inlay details, continuously cover it with black lacquer and polish till shells reappear. Finally I touched up flower shapes with black lacquer, and gold and polish by antler ash till everything shiny. Very complicated process lol, took me like 7-8 weeks 🤔. But so worth it!
