Slow Burn (Downton Abbey Fic)

Characters: Matthew, Mary, and Lady Edith

Plot: After dinner in the Drawing Room, Mary and Matthew are discussing one of Lady Mary's many suitors, including her newest one Sir Gilbert Barol.

Spoilers: Takes place in the middle of Season 1.

Fandom: Downton Abbey

“Yes, too true Sir Gilbert.” Lady Mary says, walking away and laughing heartily. She goes over and sits down next to her cousin Matthew Crawley.

“Was that Sir Gilbert Barol you were talking to?” Cousin Matthew asks Lady Mary.

“Yes indeed. You know what I like about him? He is uncomplicated and so diverse in languages.”

“And rich beyond belief.” Matthew interrupts, teasing her.

“Yes, all right. What is wrong with that?” Lady Mary asks.

“Do you honestly think him a serious prospect? Really?” Matthew says with a hint of jealousy but teasing at the same time.

“Well, why not? He is as worthy as anyone. More so than most people in this room.” Mary replies.

“I'll have you know that there are far better men than him” Matthew says.

“Oh really?” Mary teases.

“How many have there been again?” Matthew teases back.

“Oh Matthew, there hasn't been that many.” Mary answers.

“Lets see, there was Kemal Pamuk the turkish gentleman, Gillingham, Evelyn Napier, Patrick Crawley, and Me.”Matthew recounts.

“That's not that many.” Mary argues.  

“Maybe so but it wasn't like any one of them were love at first sight or anything.”  Matthew says.

“Who says they weren't?” Mary replies.

“Mary, do you believe in love at first sight?” Matthew asks hopefully.

“What a silly question. What has gotten into you tonight Mr. Crawley?” Mary asks. Matthew, feeling a little taken back by the questions answers,

“Nothing! It is just a question Mary!”

“Matthew! What is wrong with you tonight?” Mary asks, a little concerned.

“Sorry, I don't know what came over me. I am terribly sorry Mary.” Matthew replies. Unbeknownst to both of them what came over him was love. His love for Lady Mary. Just then Lady Edith comes over and says to Mary,

“Mary, Papa wants to introduce you to a Mr. Kenneth Lovell.”

“Oh, do excuse me Matthew.” and before Matthew can reply, Lady Edith whisks Mary away to meet yet another suitor.

Can you do a review of The Guilty? Or The Sound Of Music live? Or any Katherine Kelly tv show/movie? Please and thank you

I mean, reviews aren’t really my thing, if I’m going to be honest. (I’m kind of honoured that you seem to want my opinion, though.) Although I’m definitely capable of being objective about stuff, generally when I watch things I prefer to give in to my excitement over a thing and get really !!! about it because that’s more enjoyable for me.

I will, however, tell you what I thought of the Sound of Music Live, however, and of Mr Selfridge, since those are the only non-Class KK things I’ve seen. 

Sound of Music Live:

Faithful to the stage show more than the movie, which in this particular instance works really well. Maria is played by one of Katherine Kelly’s Selfridge co-stars, and the housekeeper is played by Mel from Great British Bakeoff which is fantastic. I don’t know who played Max, but I really liked him. 

I mean, it’s the Sound of Music, so you know it’s great. (If I had one criticism it would be their choice in Gretel, but I can look past that.) 

Katherine Kelly absolutely shines, honestly. She’s got an incredible voice and her acting of Elsa, the Baroness, is just perfect. She’s legit tied with Eleanor Parker in my mind, and that really is saying something. 

Also her outfits are excellent and at one point she wears a backless dress and I died it was great. 

Mr Selfridge:

As a show itself, it took me a good couple of episodes to get into, but it was enjoyable enough from the start, and Katherine Kelly helped me stick with it. I’d forgotten how much I adore period pieces, and it was fun to rediscover that. 

(Plus, suffragettes! I’m always down for fab badass ladies.) 

It has the single most infuriating protagonist out of anything I’ve ever watched, because he’s a good guy with some genuinely amazing moments, who supports the women and lower class people around him and gives them opportunities which is great, but he also does so much dumb shit like cheating on his wife who he loves more than anything, and you want to punch him continuously. 

Katherine Kelly’s character is genuinely the best, in my opinion, but there are other great ones like Rose and Agnes and Henri and Kitty. 

Katherine Kelly plays Lady Mae, who is this amazing sharp tongued socialite who used to be a show girl, and she’s a sassy smug little shit who has a lot more than that going on underneath the surface. (She also has a bunch of toy boys and it’s great.) She’s in every episode of the first season, but not for very long at any given time, but she gets a lot of focus in season two, with a storyline about her abusive husband which is really really well done because it doesn’t glorify it or show more than it needs to for shock value but it still gets all of the chilling truth across. 

Like, genuinely, it’s worth watching if only for the really well done storyline about Mae’s abusive marriage, because while it’s awful and you just want to hug the fuck out of her and protect her from the world and meanwhile burn her husband in lava, it’s so well written and she acts it so well, it gives me chills.

I quite frankly ended up skipping the later half of the third season because KK was on maternity leave and so Mae was “off in France”, and I just got so bored cos two of my other faves left and a few others had already left so I was like “urgh”. 

(Third and fourth seasons edit: and the second season, whoops features Greg Austin as Gordon Selfridge. I love Greg but I want to murder whoever gave him a moustache, ffs)

The fourth season was still fairly decent, though, Mae makes an excellent flapper and there’s a great story with her supporting a young black girl in her career at the store, which I adored. 

Basically, they’re both great, and go watch Katherine Kelly in everything you can because she’s genuinely amazing. I can’t wait to watch her in The Guilty.
