whoever hunts for war criminals obviously doesn't know what a war is like.
In a war, a nation is a unit. when your commander says "let's kill them all" or "let's rape the whole willage" you can't really do anything but obey if your life is dear for you.
because, if you tell no, they will consider you a deserter, an enemy, and your fate will be the same, or even worse then those you are about to conquer. (IF your commander doesn't shot you in the head immediately, which is the luckier option)
maybe the best you can do is to try to french leave. but if they notice it, then you are doomed again.
war is not a place of a free decision, it's a kill or be killed. cruel it is, but hunting down someone only because they decided long time ago, that their own life is more important for them, than enything else (which decision is by the way encoded in our genes) ...that's just doesn't make sence.
mostly that those things were commited in another system.
it's the same as if now someone would say wearing pink is bad, you can't do this, and they would hunt down ppl who wore pink in 1942...why? in 1942 it was free to wear pink. another system,
you can't punish something now which was a totally legal and expected behavior then.
