Dhankar Monastery, also referred to as Dhankar Gompa, is a #Buddhist temple situated in the district of #Lahual & #Spiti in #Himalyan region of Northern #India. It is situated in #Himachal Pradesh state. The Monatsery is located at a height of almost 3894 m from sea level in the Spiti #Valley and is surrounded by town #Tabo and #Kaza. The Monastery is placed at a height of 1000 ft above the confluence of Pin & Spiti rivers. The #Monastery had been declared as one of the ‘100 Most Endangered Sites in the World’ by World Monument Fund in the year 2006 and a team of non-profit groups are working to organize its #preservation. This is one of the most famous Fort Monasteries that has been built in accordance with Central #Tibetan Pattern. Total of 150 Lamas reside in this Monastery. This fort Monastery is quite similar to the Tangyud Monastery & the Key Monastery in Spiti which have been built with the typical Central Tibetan outline. The structure of Monastery is built overlooking the convergence of the Spin River & Pin River on a 300 m towering spur. Below is a small village, Shichilling. This is the #village where new #Dhankar Monastery has been constructed. The old monastery is at an approximate distance of 24 kms from Kaza, the town from where one can enter Dhankar.
