When she is not working, Rosen & Associates associate Nancy L. Kourland remains actively involved with her community by supporting Carnegie Hill Neighbors. Through this organization, Nancy L. Kourland and her neighbors ensure that their community remains safe and clean. Carnegie Hill Neighbors also undertakes a number of landmark preservation projects. At present, the organization is working to have the Church of St. Thomas Moore declared a landmark through the Landmarks Preservation Commission.
The New York Archdiocese has proposed to close the church and merge it with the St. Ignatius Loyola parish. As a result, the church is being actively considered for demolition. However, the church is viewed as an integral part of the community and completely unlike other area churches. The church’s architecture is an example of the Gothic Revival style, and many famous parishioners, including Jacqueline Onassis Kennedy, have attended the church.
In February, Community Board 8 voted for a resolution to ask the Landmarks Preservation Commission to approve the Church of St. Thomas More as an individual landmark. Carnegie Hill Neighbors urges residents to write letters to the commission to save the structure.
