This winter has been particularly rough; money even more scarce. Bounty hunting was the only way to go in times like this. Emily had been tailing this group, a small gang, with a moderate bounty on their heads. There was one person in particular that she was more interested in–the leader. Apparently they kidnapped some women and children. For what reason? She didn’t know. She was mainly in it for the money.
But, perhaps, rescuing the hostages would be a morally nice bonus.
“Dammit,” Emily cursed to herself, kicking the dirty snow beneath her. The trail ends just outside the town of Annesburg, in the middle of the woods. She scanned the area; the snow made it challenging to navigate through the uneven terrain. She looked to the sky to try to find smoke from a campfire. They can’t have gone too far, especially with these freezing conditions.
Suddenly, there was a snap of a twig. A crunch in the snow. Her head jerked towards the source of the sound, brown eyes pierced through the thicket of white trees and shrubs. Could be an animal, could not be. Most would be in hibernation, so she voted for the latter–a person. Her hand hovered over the holster along her waist, fingertips grazing along the grip of her knife. She waited, watching in complete stillness.
