HaMakhtesh HaGadol (The Big Crater) is located near Yeruham in Israel’s desert Negev. Makhtesh is the Hebrew word for a mortar grinder (מַכְתֵּשׁ). The Big Crater got its misleading name in the days when the even larger Ramon Crater was still uncharted.
