Every once in a while you'll run across a band that announces an album is their final album. I always wonder what has led to an announcement with such finality to it.

Smoke Bellow (Baltimore, Maryland) made such a proclamation prior to the release of "Structurally Sound". This is the third time we've posted about a release from this band. Each release is a unique take on pop. This release make me think more of what Horse Lords would sound like if they had a vocalist. It also makes me think of what a band like Speed The Plough might sound like if they made a more "angular guitar" album. Finally, this recalls Field Music at times.

This album was released by Portland based Moon Glyph. The label has garnered previous mentions with releases from Larry Wish and The New Lines.

I'm apparently on a bit of a Ever/Never Records jag. Not intentional, but certainly welcome since I've truly enjoyed both recent LPs from the label that have been covered here.

Patois Counselors are a Charlotte, North Carolina band that have been making music together for over a decade. Their first release was an EP back in 2015. Every release since then has been for Ever/Never. Micah first posted about the band back in 2019 and he referenced both Tripod Jimmie and Pere Ubu in his write-up.

The songs available from "Protection Racket" highlight Bo White's vocals - both melody and the sound of his voice - more than earlier releases. "Cop City" has almost an Edwyn Collins swagger to it. The music however, leans more to post-punk in the vein of Protomartyr and the band's beloved Pere Ubu, Wire and The Fall.

Earlier releases have sounds that make me think of Tropical Fuck Storm and at times the great and underrated Larry Wish.

I ran across yet another release from The New Lines that I loved and this got me looking into some of the back catalogue of Moon Glyph (Portland), one of the labels that released their work. Turns out, one of Moon Glyphs earliest releases was "Crazy Taxi Cool" from incredibly prolific Larry Wish - a musical collective based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. From what I can tell, Larry Wish is really the vehicle for the music of Adam Wish-Werven.

Releases go back to 2010 and have continued up through 2025. I think this single - "Astral Projunction b/w Being There" is the catchiest/most consistent one/two punch I've yet heard in the vast Larry Wish canon. Both songs come from the full length LP "The Mind is the Builder." This is prog/pop in the vein of XTC (or The Dukes of Stratosphear), Sparks or Nolan Potter.

This single and "The Mind is the Builder" were released on Wish-Werven's own Bumpy label.
