An epic return from hiatus. Here are my top five(+1) K-Pop tracks 2012! (based on personal affection, not popularity.) This is not in order, but I will confess that "Sherlock" and "I Will Show You" are probably my favorites.
JYP - "You're the One."
because I think it's just a straightforward R&B track done really well. I like the dance. Not to mention SOCKS! Also, JYP is 40 years old and he's still in great shape and keeping up with guys literally half his age.
I probably don't have to explain this one, but it's about being in love with someone so much that you can't see or hear anyone else.
ENGLISH LYRICS YOU CAN SING: "Babygirl, you're the only one for me."
Super Junior - "Sexy, Free & Single."
because you are remiss to talk about Korean pop music and not mention Super Junior. I hate the clothes, but I like to have a good time. (The boys & I have so much in common.)
I probably don't have to explain this one, either. It's about going out because finally, you are free and ready.
ENGLISH LYRICS YOU CAN SING: "Sexy, Free, and Single. I'm Ready, too. Bingo!" And mixed in "Have a good time," also "party time."
SHINee - "Sherlock."
because there is so much Michael Jackson influence and stonewash denim in this that I am pretty sure it's 1993. (The one guy is even styled a little like Axl Rose.)
From what I gather, this song is called "Sherlock" because it is about going through the clues about a relationship and wanting to know what's really going on.
f(x) - "Electric Shock."
because f(x) is my favorite girl group. (partially music based, but mostly based on the fact that I think they seem tougher than the others.) also because I tried to resist this song, and then decided I didn't want to.
This song can be inferred, but it's about being so attracted to/in love with someone that it is like you're being electrified.
ENGLISH LYRICS YOU CAN SING: "Nanananananana Electric Shock" also "black hole" and "laser laser"
Ailee - "I Will Show You."
because I think she is singing her lungs off. and the song and dance are both pretty disco, which I can dig. (There is an official music video for this song, but I think she looks overdone in it, and the message is a little lost).
This song is a common pop notion in that it is about how this soandso didn't want me before, but I will show him/her by becoming cooler and more desirable. Then I will date someone better (unless it's for a music video).
ENGLISH LYRICS YOU CAN SING: "Boy you gotta be aware."
HONORABLE MENTION.
G-Dragon - "Crayon."
because this song is FASCINATING. I can't declare officially that I like it, but it's just got so much going on that I'm drawn to it. I think I don't like the chorus, but I like the pun and the rest of the song. Also G-Dragon is huge in Korea, so he deserves a mention.
Get your crayon is supposed to mean to get your cray (as in crazy) on. And the rest of the track is your typical club hip-hop fare. "I'm such an amazing artist that everyone is going to want to go crazy for this."
ENGLISH LYRICS YOU CAN SING: "Get your crayon," "Why so serious?" and "Swag. Check. Swag. Check." There's other English sprinkled in, but you can find it for yourself!
That's it. Soon it will be Christmas so I will be posting a bunch about the holidays in Korea. Honest. (I'll have a week off from work, so there's no excuse not to.)
