Russian volume eyelash extensions involve the highly skilled artist hand-creating fans out of extremely thin individual extensions, whereas classic extensions involve the application of one extension to one natural lash. Can you see any fans in the top photo? There are one or two, but for the most part, what fans are there are closed up and spiky. How did this happen? First of all, as you can see, the extensions in the top photo are quite long. As I tell my clients, fullness & volume come from extensions that aren't too much longer than the client's natural lashes, like bushes versus trees. Secondly, my fans are fluffy. I make them by hand for each lash. After I make the fan, I dip it in adhesive and carefully attach it to the natural lash. I don't just grab several extensions, stick them on the natural lash and then try to spread them into a fan. My technique has taken years to perfect, and I'm still far from perfect! Another culprit behind spiky extensions is poor hygiene. Extensions must be kept clean! Otherwise, dirt, makeup, sweat, and oils get trapped in the fan, causing it to close right up. So, regardless of who makes your fans, keep them clean and brushed! I devote about half an hour teaching new clients how to clean their volume lashes with a special cleanser that contains no sodium laurel sulphate, no oil, and no silicone derivatives (found in most "oil-free" cleaners). What it does contain are botanicals like rosemary & tea tree that fight infection and prevent the demodex folliculorum (eyelash mite).
