The Evolution of E-Sports

(Tarpon Springs) When someone mentions sports, the first things that come to mind are probably football, baseball, basketball, hockey, or soccer. What people may not know about is the evolution of a new brand of sports: eSports.

ESports is the term used to describe a wide variety of video game tournaments, particularly those focused on games such as League of Legends, Counterstrike: Global Offensive, and Dota 2, just to list a few.

While not truly ‘new’, eSports definitely aren’t old, their roots stemming back to the end of the 20th century.  The first eSports competition, the Space Invaders Tournament, was held by Atari in 1980.

Since then, eSports tournaments grew in popularity throughout the 1990s. They became so common, that Nintendo and Blockbuster began sponsoring world championships.

The mid-1990s introduced PC gaming, which added a whole extra layer to eSports gaming. In 1997, the Red Annihilation tournament was held for the game Quake, which drew in over 2,000 participants all vying for the prize for winning – a Ferrari once owned by the game’s lead developer.

Not long after, the Cyberathlete Professional League (CPL) was founded. That same year, it held its first tournament; the following year, they were already offering $15,000 in prize money.

While most early eSports focused on first person shooters, sports, and arcade-style games, the release of StarCraft: Blood War sparked an interest in introducing real-time strategy games to eSports.

ESports really started to take off at the beginning of the 21st century. World Cyber Games and the Electronic Sports World Cup, two major international tournaments, were launched in 2000, and have been held every year since then.

The Major League Gaming organization was founded in 2002 and would go on to become the most prominent gaming league. The league was so successful, that they were able to award a hundred and seventy thousand dollars in their 2013 Winter Championships.

The release of more games that appealed to a wider variety of people brought more to the table for eSports to use. The Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA), though new to the eSports scene, has already contributed a lot.

League of Legends has brought a great deal of popularity to eSports, with 1.6 million viewers watching the 2011 League of Legends tournament. The prize pool in the consecutive year’s tournament boasted as much as five million dollars.

Looking to the future, it’s hard to say how eSports will continue to grow, but the fact that they will continue to grow is plain to see.
