I often avoid writing because I have the kind of ADHD that makes switching between tasks painful. So when I write, or do anything I love, it's hard to stop. And make dinner. Or take care of kids. Or love on my boyfriend. Or answer emails. Or just pee. It's tough on my relationships. And my body. And my mind. ### But...I been writin'. @thirdplacebooks in Seattle tonight, I heard Mia Garcia talk about "The Resolutions" from @lasmusasbooks She shared her desire, as a young woman, to read something that was like a John Hughes movie starring a Puerto Rican girl, and the process of strengthening her voice as a Latinx writer by adding Puerto Rican characters to her books. There was a time, she said, when she thought, maybe, she wasn't supposed to do that. ### I recognize those feelings. I've lived them. They're why I'm so dedicated to supporting writers of color tell their stories. No one will know those stories unless we tell them, and no one can tell them better than we can. We not only need new voices telling new stories, we also need to hear old stories with new protagonists ### And they're not always dark, and they'rel not always gritty or political Sometimes they're silly, romantic, epic or sad. But they always star people like us, and that matters.
