TOP 10 things you dislike about Umineko

I’m going to put this under a readmore because huge spoilers for the entire series sort of

I PROBABLY CAN’T COME UP WITH 10, BUT

1) the vn doesn’t condemn yasu’s mindset as much as it should. I actually have a huge post about this that I’ve had saved in my drafts for a while, but basically, while it obviously doesn’t condone what she did, it never really takes the time to say how her thoughts were wrong. thinking that dying and having everyone be happy in another life is ridiculous, and I’m glad the manga version seems to have beato admit this to ange (I’ve seen pages like that floating around, anyway)

2) just continuing off of the last one, yasu’s thought that she could never actually live in the first place was also wrong. considering the setting and time period, it might have been difficult, but she could have at least lived. and it’s not like she was actually stuck on the island, she had access to a shitload of gold. her “fate” was not inescapable, the idea of “inescapable fate” is ridiculous to begin with, and once again, the vn hardly brings this up as much as it should, from what I can remember. her main reason for feeling “stuck” was because she was waiting for battler, and that brings us to number 3

3) yasu was ridiculous about battler. she didn’t just love him, she was obsessed. it’s questionable that she even really loved him at all. I mean, considering their ages when the promise happened, and what we know about how rarely the family goes to visit and when yasu started working in the first place, battler and shannon probably only met less than a dozen times before, and only for a day or two at a time. and they were young children who clearly couldn’t have had a full understanding of everything yet. yasu latched onto him because they shared some interests and he was the only one like that her age at the time. that coupled with the bullying she went through made her latch onto him, or rather the promise he made. yasu’s obsession was more with the promise of being taken away rather than the guy who said he’d do it. of course she was young, so it’s somewhat understandable, but she should’ve grown out of it and realized how ridiculous it was rather than waiting six years. of course, because she also learned about her own body and such, it’s also understandable that she didn’t get the chance to grow out of it, but… there were three or four years between the promise and the time that happened, I think? I forget exactly, but there was some time. …well, really I don’t mind this being used for the plot and yasu’s character, but it’s a ridiculous thing when you think about it

4) this is more about the fandom than the series, but… people hating george so much. if he’s not an interesting character to you, then that’s fine. but so many people demonize him as being some sort of manipulative horrible person when he never really did anything like that. people try to argue about how he mentioned having sayo’s feelings to himself to control, but they never bring up how he immediately says after that that it would be wrong to abuse that and take it too far, and ultimately he’s just talking about teasing her. he made a bad analogy with school bullies and stuff, but it’s obvious that he had no bad intent like that. and he didn’t order her to marry him. he “ordered” her to at least take the ring, and he only did so as a bit of joking around to look cool. we see plenty of times that sayo truly does like the idea of being with him, her only problem with him is that she’s afraid she’ll disappoint him. george himself was not bad for her. he definitely was kind of eh in the past, but he admits that himself and he’s clearly improved since then and is still trying to improve more, the series makes that very clear. so I really don’t get all the hate toward george, hardly any of it has any actual basis within canon

5) this is still about the fandom and george, but I’m separating it as a whole other issue just because it’s so ridiculous: the “george letter theory”. the letters were a surprise from kyrie, so george couldn’t have gotten rid of the letter beforehand. and there were SEVERAL people there watching as the letters were handed out. how could he have just thrown one away without anyone noticing? even if he could do it, where are the clues that hint about it? there’s never any hint toward that, the entire “theory” is just a means to try and pin things on george because nobody likes him. it’s much more likely that battler just forgot or was too shy to write to her in the first place

6) also in regards to the fandom: rosatrice

7) the lack of details about heaven. it’s not important to the plot, so obviously I don’t blame ryukishi for this and it’s probably better this way, but man it’d be nice to know more about where will and dlanor even come from
