kashgar grill
So have a bunch of friends who are really into food and embody The Food Ronin spirit. I thought I might put in some guest articles here. So without further ado, Laura Wang is going to cover a Turkish-Chinese spot here in Irvine ...
At the corner of Jeffery and Irvine Center Drive, there is a collection of decent casual Asian dining restaurants- among them: Long’s Kitchen (Human cuisine), Four Sea (Taiwanese breakfast) and iTea (Taiwanese milk tea and snacks). A few weeks ago, I heard about a newcomer to that area named Kashgar Grill and dug around a little bit on Yelp. I was excited because they seemed to serve food from a particular region in China-Xinjiang (a province next to Tibet in Northwestern China). Yesterday, I finally gave them a try despite some of the Yelp reviews complaining that “the owner was rude”.
I went on a Friday evening around 6:30pm and was immediately seated. Taking a look around the restaurant, I can appreciate the Xinjiang style decorations including small pots and giant tapestry hanging on the walls.
Without too much wait, I was served the “big plate chicken (medium)”.It was a plate of steaming spicy chicken (Bone-in) cooked with potatoes, onions, and green/red peppers, as well as flat wide noodles hiding underneath the protein and vegetables, all ingredients brought together by the savory sauce infused by the Chinese/Islamic spices. From the first to the last bite, I was delighted. The dish was everything I could have ever asked for in a serving of “big plate chicken”. The noodles were hand-pulled and had a nice balance of texture and softness, perfectly absorbing the flavors from the chicken and spices. Overall, the spicy level was just right for me. To top everything off, the owners were extremely nice and friendly, contrary to some Yelp reviews.
What I would definitely try next time are: Beef With Egg & Black Fungus 木须肉 $ 20.99 and Fried Lamb Slice 炒烤肉 $ 19.99. Even though their menu is on the pricier side, I believe the quality of ingredients and authentic flavors are well-worth it, especially when there is no close competitor yet in the Irvine area (that I know of).
