Pas détesté ce roman curieusement vintage qui puise assez ouvertement dans le corpus queer de la toute fin du XXe — beaucoup pensé à Cité de la nuit — en le twistant à la manière d’un livre de Tesich ou d’Irving : on est tout proche du roman d’apprentissage US pur malt avec protagoniste genderfuck dont les pouvoirs magiques — changer de genre et d’attributs physiques à volonté — donnent lieu à une galerie de portraits pas toujours très subtils jusqu’au climax obligatoire et par ailleurs bien réussi à base de solitude larvée et de sida. Un peu le même sentiment qu’à la lecture d’Une œuvre fracassante d’un génie déchirant ou de n’importe quel livre de Safran Foer, mais en légèrement mieux : un bouquin globalement roublard et puissamment traditionnel qui cache ses ficelles très « roman américain » derrière un avant-gardisme de façade et des motifs utilisés pour leur puissance de subversion performative plutôt que pour la vision du monde qu’ils traduisent en principe. Pas que je doute des bonnes intentions de Lawlor ou son statut de personne queer ; c’est juste qu’ils s’incarnent dans un roman qui ressemble plus volontiers à Harvey Milk qu’à Journal du voleur.
