AllMusic Staff Pick: Marcus Belgrave Working Together 1992 Jazz This 1992 date between Detroit trumpet legend Marcus Belgrave and drummer/composer Lawrence Williams is a snapshot in time not only of the two principals, but of the Detroit jazz scene in general that was about to explode, with musicians either leaving town or making names for themselves that were big enough that they could call their own shots. Of the 11 compositions here, Williams wrote nine of them. The tone is elegant post-bop with modal shades thrown across an array of contemporary blues settings.

1. Can you describe your journey to music-making?
This story has a lot of boring details. It started when I was eleven and haven't finished yet.
2. Can you describe your creative process of making music in the various types of projects that you have done /own work, theatre, film, etc/?
I listen to the music & sounds and then let them flow through me. Sometimes the result is surprisingly interesting sometimes boring. Most of the time listening carefully is just enough.
3. What is the most important thing when creating music for extra-musical projects?
It has to be natural. It has to fit.
4. What would you say is the most important element of your music?
That it moves. It has that constant moving sound which is naturally around us. Or at least I hope so.
5. What was your most challenging/rewarding project?
Co-working with Lawrence Williams. I learnt a lot about the freedom of music.
6. What sort of projects are you available for?
I'm open for anything except commercials.
