League of Legends Season 3 World Championship
So the final matchup of the League of Legends Season 3 World Championship just ended. It was a spectacular show put on by Riot Games, and to everyone involved, I give a very sincere and excited congrats on a job well done.
Now, full disclosure, I worked for Riot for about a year in total, as an intern. I have a number of good friends who are still at Riot. So it's safe to say that I'm not a completely unbiased party here.
However, I would like to give credit where credit is due, and go through a handful of really impressive details from the event:
The Venue
It's hard to enter into the house of the Los Angeles Lakers and host a video game competition. Riot not only succeeded in filling the stands, but also in creating a vibe of a true athletic event. But, on the other hand, there were some really cool League-esque details that really made it a unique experience. Graggy Ice plastic beer cups anyone?
The Opening
I was perhaps more excited to see the opening performance than any of the matches. The orchestral piece that Christian Linke ( AKA Praeco ) crafted for the S2 World Championships was a work of art. I was thrilled to see that this particular portion of the event was substantially leveled-up. Chrystal Method, the Hollywood Scoring Orchestra, and the rest of the artists truly killed it. Here's a link to the performance for those interested.
The Professionalism
Finally, as a sincere moment of commendation, I must point out that Riot succeeded in executing what felt like a serious eSports event. The technology was fantastic (dat HD screen), the intermissions were smooth, the casters were brilliant and entertaining (shoutout to Phreak, Riv, Jatt, and the rest of 'em). It felt like a professional, legitimate sporting event, and I can't overstate how important that is to eSports.
Now, time for the folks at Riot and all of the teams that participated in LCS this year to take let loose, have a drink, get some sleep, and start thinking about what next year is going to be like. Who knows what's in store.
Godlike is fantastic at running away slowly
