Day 15, “100 Days of Esperanto” - Repetition, another key to success
The field goal kicker is one of the hardest positions to master in American football. The position is not only physical, but it is also psychological. You run on to the field and need to kick the ball from wherever the offense left it. Tens of thousands of fans in the stadium are watching you in addition to the millions on TV. If you make the field goal you are a hero, if not, you are a bum.
How do you excel in that position? You practice. You kick and kick and kick, the ball every day for hours at a time. Repetition is the key for your success.
Learning a language requires repetition. Memrise uses this method. In a 5-minute lesson, you are introduced to 3 or 4 words and a sentence using those words. The lesson is built on repetition. You are asked to select the correct definitions for the words, write the word, write the sentence, write the sentence by dragging word tiles, etc. You do each of these activities a few times. This process forms the lesson.
At first, I thought this was boring. However, it works. Memrise also uses a time factor, a “beat the clock” approach to make the exercise more exciting. When I teach, I’ll include more repetition in my lesson plans. As a student, I’ll appreciate repetition more.
Repetition is also important for writers. For nonfiction writing, you want your work to:
Tell them what you are going to write.
Write it.
Tell them what you just wrote.
Writing every day is the most important act of repetition. You become a better writer by writing every day. You overcome writer’s block by writing something every day.
Repetition is one of the easiest methods to become better at what you do. Repetition is one path to success.
