Pop: Favorite and least fav song
As a musician, I have way too many favorite and NOT favorite songs, so I decided to pick an easy genre to talk about - pop music.
My current favorite: Calvin Harris’s This Is What You Came For ft. Rihanna
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kOkQ4T5WO9E
I think Calvin Harris’s beats and use of electronic sounds is really well done. He makes use of current technologies to make some amazing music. I also love Rihanna’s voice. Who doesn’t? Additionally, my one pet peeve about pop are its nonsensical or cliche or unmeaningful lyrics, but this song doesn’t bother my inner music snob.
My all-time least favorite: Rebecca Black’s Friday
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kfVsfOSbJY0
Rebecca Black rose to infamy as a tween bad pop singer back in 2011, and to me, her song Friday represents all of the characteristics about pop that I hate. One, bad singing in pop music. Pop is well-known for use of autotune to cover up pitch errors or sounds by pop singers, but even autotune can’t hide how bad the singing is. You just can’t get her nasal voice out of your head “It’s Friday, Friday...”. Two, lyrics that are so dumbed down. Sure, the majority of pop songs are churned out to be easy on the ears and easy to remember for the masses, but I think it was almost offensive how bad Friday is. The lyrics made no sense, and the song had no intention on giving the listeners something more to think about. Some lyrics were so literal, like “Tomorrow is Saturday And Sunday comes after... wards” that it just annoyed me like crazy. Third, the song was really tweeny. Really really tweeny. So yeah, Friday annoys me like crazy.
