As long as I can remember, music was a huge topic that everyone just loved talking about. What is it about music that’s worth mentioning? Growing up in a family where music was frowned upon and called a “distraction from life,” I was not exposed to the beauty and meaning of music until I saw Daughtry’s performance on the fifth season of American Idol, which aired on March 1st, 2006. There was something so stunning about his performance that no other artists I’ve listened to in the past decade can ever surpass. Maybe its the authentic meaning that left its marks.

Many of us might look at this video and say its not a big deal or even ask what’s so special about his performance since he didn’t win the title American Idol. He might not be labeled at that time as Americas favorite singer, but he was undoubtedly an Idol to a lot of us later on in the years. Not only was Daughtry “a huge hit by Idol standards”, but “it was one of the few hit rock albums—period—in 2006.” Even though Daughtry is one of the older rock albums, his lyrics never fail to make its impact. Whether it’s on the radio or in our personal playlists, Daughtry seems to always know what to say in the right moments. We can all agree that we’ve all had that moment where a song comes on in the radio that tugs at our emotions simply because it knows how to say everything we don’t know how to express and that is the beauty of music. Not only do we get to experience the makings of the music and see the performers indulge in their passion, but we feel connected to these performers in a way that’s kind of weird if you look at it. WE’VE NEVER MET THESE PEOPLE! Yet, there’s a sense of understanding we feel when we listen to their music.

There has to be one song that really stands out and speaks to you. Every one of the songs in his albums Leave This Town, Break The Spell, Daughtry, and Baptized has strength in its lyrics. Sometimes it feels like he’s quietly telling us to be strong because we are not the only ones going through a rough time. As a culture, we assume that whatever it is that we go through is unrelateable and impossible for another human being to understand, but music poses as the bridge that binds the gap between our unique experiences. Yes, we might not be referring to the same particular emotion that Daughtry’s music brings out in us, but we have the same appreciation of his lyrics! Strangers are no longer strangers when we talk about music!
