Of all the bands that came out with debut full-lengths this year, I thought ROAM’s “Backbone” was one of the most over-looked. After the first few singles came out I was sure their new album would launch them to new levels, and I’m sure it did in a lot of ways but it didn’t put them in the same conversation as bands like State Champs or Neck Deep. And maybe they don’t deserve to be in that conversation yet. But they served in the trenches at this years Warped Tour (I caught them in San Diego where they kinda got screwed with Set Your Goals playing what was essentially a surprise set at the same time gearing up for the 10 year anniversary tour of Mutiny! that left ROAM’s crowd a little thin), have a solid album under their belts, and the backing of label like Hopeless. “Backbone” did leave a lot of it’s influences on it’s sleeve so maybe now that they have the pressure of putting out that first album off their back they can settle in and figure out what ROAM sounds like when they do more blending of their influences into something unique and less paying homage to them.
