The director of Kalakshetra at the time Leela Samson, along with several students giving a lecture demonstration for NCPA Mumbai. It's incredibly heartening and inspirational seeing so many kids getting involved in dance and having their eyes and ears opened to this art form. I wonder how much I agree with Leela's emphatic declaration that the future generation of Indians have the right to inherit our traditions and culture. At least on the national level because I'm tired of Indian culture becoming homogenized. People should be encouraged to take up indigenous art forms of their region. I'm not against non-Tamils taking up Bharatanatyam, but I do believe that there is much value in appreciating the dancing of your ancestors and propagating them. I would love to see more kids dancing Kathakali, Mohiniattam, Kuchipudi, and Sattriya at culture shows and rangapraveshams/arangetrams.
