How to create an atmosphere: Lecture Hall
Sight
rows of chairs and desks
individual desks or long desks for multiple students
everything arranged to face the front of the room
a lecturer's podium at the front
a presentation screen and chalkboard behind it
the podium has a microphone and a computer on it
a diverse group of students
each with notebooks, laptops, or tablets
attentively following along, taking notes, or participating in discussions
some being on their phones, or doing something else
water bottles on the desks, sometimes even food
Hearing
the amplified voice of the lecturer
explaining concepts, asking questions, debating with students
students answering or asking, sharing their ideas
the soft rustling of pages
the tapping of keyboards
the scratching of pens as students take notes
the subtle hum of air conditioning, or of the old radiator in the room
the creaking of chairs
the soft murmur of whispered conversations during group work or breaks
the sound of pens falling to the ground every so often
Touch
the feel of the desk's surface (smooth wood, laminate, metal)
chairs with cushions, wood, or just made out of hard plastic, providing varying levels of comfort
the tactile experience of holding a pen
typing on a laptop
flipping through pages of a notebook
the feeling of your knuckles on the hard table when you knock at the end for the professor (maybe that's a German thing...)
Smell
a hint of disinfectant
if it's an old building, the musty smell of it
the smell of coffee, brought in by the tired students
after hours of lecture time, the smell of too many people in one room
Taste
the taste of the pen a student is nervously gnawing at while trying to learn
the taste of the coffee or other drinks brought in
the taste of whatever food the students sneak in to eat during the lecture
in Winter: the taste of mulled wine that student council is selling (maybe that's a German thing as well, it also smells amazing)
