Erik's heart pumped with exertion as he ran through the never ending labyrinth of the Shopping Mall. The sound of his own heartbeat slammed in his ears, his labored breathing panicked and raspy sounding as it depleted from his lungs with each lunge forward he took. His lips were pressed together in a thin line, quivering as he quickly pushed open the door to the backroom service tunnels.
His teammates had all left him, said he was too slow and better off, well, something Erik didn't want to think about. He had no idea where they were, and by the annoyed looks on their faces just ten minutes into the trial, he assumed it was best to just leave them be. Were they even alive? He hoped so. He didn't like to be alone though. He really tried to be brave, but he was absolutely terrified. He didn't even have a rig this time, his E.S.O.P. being under repairs. Was that even allowed? How was he supposed to get by?
Hell, he wasn't even sure what he was supposed to be doing. He saw the man bounded to that odd mechanism in the center of the mall plaza. Erik didn't want to hurt anyone. Maybe his teammates had already done everything and left him here in these walls of the mall. His eyes stung with built up tears at the thought of it.
Erik didn't want to get hurt, or worse. He knew he had to keep going. Never give up, they say. So after a few shaky self-reassurances mumbled under his breath, he pushed forward with half trembling legs. He was treading down another service hallway when he heard the faint, yet distinct sound of a buzzing chainsaw. Erik gasped as the noise grew closer, lingering just outside the corridor he was currently in. With a swallow, he quickly opened a door that led into one of the stores.
All he had to do was wait it out. They'd wander past, unknowing that he was nearby. The room was dark and humid, eerily silent as he brought down his night vision goggles, the green hue showcasing the numerous boxes and displays of vinyl records, along with framed paintings adorning the walls. Mannequins acted out the scene of browsing through collections and performing sales, which nerved Erik a bit. It all seemed so real, though none of it was. He hid among them, crouching behind a record stand as the chainsaw grew nearer.
Erik held his breath. He thought his heart was going to beat out of his chest if he wasn't careful. Sweat dripped from his forehead and his hands shook as he tightened his arms against his chest. The light from underneath the door grew dark, indicating the prime assets were right outside. The growling noise of the saw was at its peak, and Erik's wide eyes were fixated on the door.
Please don't come in. Please don't come in. Please don't-
The door creaked open, the light casting a dark shadow on the twins that made Erik hold back a fearful whine. The man scanned the room, light reflecting off his glasses, holding the revving chainsaw with both hands as it purred in his hands. The woman, connected to his upper back, looked into the dark room as well, before peering down at him with narrowed brows. "Otto? I don't think there's anyone there."
"Could've sworn I saw something slip in here, dear Arora."
Otto and Arora. What was their last name? K...Kress. They have nice names, Erik thought. He stared at them with fear sweeping over him, just waiting for them to forget this room, forget anything Otto might've seen, to just leave. Eventually, Otto put his hand back on the door handle with a sigh. "Somewhere else. The night is young."
Erik watched as he brought the handle closer to him, taking a step back and almost to the point of shutting the door. He let out the pent up sigh he was holding, fingers still trembling as the fear and anxiety rushed through him. He cautiously stood up from behind the record stand and took one step forward.
Crack.
Erik gasped in terror, looking down at the floor to see the pieces of shattered glass his shoe currently stood on. His head snapped back towards the door, that was about three inches close to being completely shut though. All hope was lost though, as it rushed back open and the twins looked in, the light from the hallway dimly lighting up Erik's petrified face.
"Ah," Otto started, a malicious grin on his face, "I knew there was a little mouse here."
His chainsaw sparked to life again as he and Arora treaded forward into the dark. Erik shrieked, backing up with pleas falling from his mouth in stuttered out deep breaths. His back hit one of the stands, knocking it over with a loud crash, which only made him jump more and fall backwards. His hands came out in front of him, covering his nervous face as his body curled up. "N-n-no, p-please!"
The twins stood right in front of him. Otto grabbed his leg, dragging him out of the dark room and into the light of the hallway. Erik screamed, hands swinging about and leg kicking out in the air. His nails dragged against the tile, trying to find a grip on the slick floor. He was suddenly in the light, eyes squinting at the sudden brightness. Erik stared in horror as his capturers smirked down at him. Arora raised one of her eyebrows.
"Why aren't you with your friends, hmm?"
A tear spilled from Erik's eye as he shook his head. "T-t-they all....l-left me." He choked on a sob, voice shaking along with his body. Arora's smirk faltered and she looked down at Otto. The man turned to look at her the best he could, his own grin disappearing at seeing Arora's somewhat confused face. He turned back to Erik.
"What's your name, boy?"
"Erik. M-my name i-is Erik. P-please, don't h-hurt me, mister."
"Why did they leave you, Erik?"
The boy sniffled, a frown heavy on his panicked face as another tear ran down his cheek. He carefully brought an elbow to the floor to hold him up, the other one still defensively out in front of him. "Said I...said I wasn't g-good enough. T-that I was slow. I'm n-not though! I c-can do l-lots of stuff."
Otto hummed, peering down at him with narrowed eyes that were currently in thought. Erik stared up at him, nervously biting the inside of his cheek as his eyes silently pleaded with the look of a lost puppy. A brief moment passed before Arora tapped his shoulder with a hum. "Brother?"
Otto was pulled from his thoughts, nodding his head with a sigh. His chainsaw turned off in his hands, the gravelly purring turning to a silence. The slightest bit of relief tugged at Erik's chest, but he was still shaking in horror. "My boy," he started, sounding more disappointed than anything, "you must have confidence. You must walk or get walked on. There's no other way to life."
Erik let out a shaky breath, exceptionally weary at the two towering over him. He listened carefully to their words and nodded with a tremble. A few more sniffles were heard from him as Arora spoke up.
"Erik, dear. Dry those eyes. This is saddening."
Erik wiped at his cheeks, obeying her words in fear of accidentally upsetting them. Otto hummed in agreeance. "Yes, it quite is. Shall we take pity on him this time?" Erik's breath hitched, hope swelling in his chest. His eyes were wide, silently wishing for his prayer to be given to him. Arora spoke up.
"Just this once."
Erik let out a breath of relief, shoulders dropping as his eyes looked to the ground with a close. His lips quivered, eyes quickly snapping back up to them with more tears threatening to spill over. "T-thank you, m-ma'am!" The tears fell, staining his cheeks again as he let out a few quiet sobs and sniffles. "R-r-really... thank y-you. I...I-"
Otto interrupted him with a soft grin. "My boy, stop crying. You cannot keep moving with tears blinding you."
Erik nodded wildly, wiping his palm against his face. He had the tiniest bit of a smile, yet he was still shaking. Arora grinned, putting her arm on Otto's shoulder and nodding towards the boy on the floor. "Perhaps we should help the boy stop whining. To find his confidence."
Otto nodded with a hum. He sat the chainsaw on the ground next to him with a thud, stepping closer to Erik. Fear and confusion set in Erik's chest as he cautiously crawled backwards with trembling hands in front of him. The grin on Otto's face only widened. "Fear not, boy. We aren't going to hurt you. You mustn't go back out there without a smile."
Erik tilted his head, stuttering out as the two leaned over him, Otto's hands poised in front of him. "W-w-what do y-you me-ehehe!"
The hands in front of him landed on his waist, fingers scribbling against his sides in quick motions. Erik was interrupted from his stutters, instead taken over by giggles that made his hands shakily find Otto's. His eyes squeezed shut as he tried to protect his sides, pulling on the man's fingers. "Thahahat tihihickles!"
Arora hummed with a tone of playfulness. "Oh, does it?"
Erik fell onto his back, legs gently kicking out. "Y-yehehes!"
Otto let out a laugh of his own. "Well isn't that wonderful then, my boy." His hands travelled to his stomach, where Erik's breath hitched and more giggles spilled from his lips. His face turned up slightly, a smile playing on his lips that spread wider with each touch on his sensitive torso.
"Ihihi guessehehe!"
Arora cooed at him, a soft smile on her features. She twisted to gaze at him. "Aw, look at that smile, Otto."
Otto hummed, staring down at the boy as he wiggled his fingers on his stomach, eliciting a squeak from Erik. "Hm, yes. It is a pleasant sight."
"It's adorable."
The teasing compliment made Erik smile wider as heat rushed to his tear-stained cheeks. A light shade of pink dusted them as he stuttered out. "T-thahahank yohou, Ihihi thihink."
The two of them chuckled softly at his words, finding him and his reactions surprisingly endearing. Otto's hands crept up to his ribs, making Erik suck in a breath as his back arched off the floor slightly. His giggles increased in pitch. "H-hehehey!" Otto hummed and titled his head to the side.
"What is it, boy?"
"It tickles mohohore!"
Arora giggled. "You don't say, Erik!" She tapped Otto's shoulder. "Lean closer. I want to help."
Erik gasped between his airy giggles, shaking his head slightly. "Ohoho gohohosh!"
Otto nodded. "Why of course, dear." He tilted his body forward slightly, leaning over Erik more so Arora's arm could come down and meet Erik's waist. Her hand found his stomach, poking in random patterns and making the already giggling boy squeak with each prod.
"Ahahaha, oho my gohohosh!"
"Aww," Arora cooed with a content grin, "those giggles are like a melody."
Erik didn't know what to do with his hands. Should he try and fight them off? Or just take it? He'd hate to make them mad; this seemed like the best thing they could've done to him, as odd as it might've been. He opted for just curling up, hands crossing against his waist and squeezing to his sides.
It didn't deter the twins' fingers though, as Otto's hands dug more into his ribs while Arora's five fingers poked and wiggled against his stomach and sides. Erik shrieked when Otto's deft fingers landed on a particularly sensitive rib. His giggles kicked up into laughter, legs kicking against the floor. "Ehehe, I cahahan't tahake it!"
Otto chuckled. "Well sure you can, my boy! I don't believe we're finished yet."
"Not at all." Arora beamed.
Erik threw his head back with tightly shut eyes, smile showing his teeth as it was open with boyish laughter. "It tihihickles soho muhuhuch!"
"Aww, you poor child!"
The tease made Erik giggle out a whine as the blush spread across his cheeks more with a brighter shade. Otto climbed higher on his ribs, eliciting a yelp from the boy. His arms tightened to his sides further, hands coming up to press tightly against the spot, knocking Otto's hands from their position. Otto tutted with a grin, shaking his head. "Now, now, Erik. You must move your hands away."
"B-buhuhut mister-"
"Erik."
There was so much authority and power in his tone, Erik was afraid he'd make this situation worse. So, hesitantly, Erik's shaking hands slowly uncovered his upper ribs and he led them to the floor, trying with all his might to keep them there willingly. Otto's hands were back on his ribs, making Erik jump under the touch and stammer out more high-pitched giggles. "Ah! G-gohoho easy, plehehease!"
"Uh oh," Arora chuckled, "he must be pretty sensitive there, hmm?"
"Yehehehes! I ahaham!"
The poor boy was so gullible, it made the twins feel the slightest bit of sympathy for him. Otto hummed with a soft grin, nodding his head as he flexed his fingers against Erik's ribs. "Ah, well I suppose I can try."
His fingers dug in gently, wiggling into the divots above his thin shirt. Erik screeched, back arching up into Otto's fingers and slamming against the floor again. Bubbly laughter spewed past his lips, hands coming up to grab onto Otto's wrists. He didn't pull them away though. They just wrapped around his arms and trembled as he squirmed around.
"Ahehehehe, mihihihster please!"
Otto hummed, his eyes widening in faux surprise as his grin grew in width. "Why, I'm barely touching you, dear boy!"
Arora's fingers continued to poke along his stomach, keeping Erik squeaking and squirming around as the two reduced him to a pile of airy laughter on the floor. It reverberated off the walls of the service hall and made the twins look towards each other in amusement.
Erik's hands fought the floor, fingertips griping the tile in search of any friction to keep him steady. His head was thrown back and he shook it as his back arched up again. "I-I neheed ahaha breheheheak!"
Otto peered down at the giggling boy, raising an eyebrow with an amused smirk. He needed a break? Indicating he was okay with this? What a cute little mouse. The two of them paused their fingers, resting them on their reserved spots and smiling down at Erik. He let out deep breaths, giggling at the phantom sensations that travelled around his torso. He peeked an eye open, looking up to the twin's with a wobbly smile. "Gohohoodness! That was," he let out a giggly exhale, "ahaha lohohot."
Otto hummed with a chuckle, a softness tugging on the inside of his chest at the sight of Erik below him. He leaned back, hands coming to grab the sides of his suit. "Now, my boy, listen very carefully." He leaned down more, face soft, yet with a new strerness shown on it as he nodded towards Erik. "Do you remember what I told you earlier?"
Erik looked towards the wall in thought for a moment. He gazed back up at Otto, nodding slowly and swallowing nervously. "W-walk or get walked on?"
The man gave a nod of his head. "Exactly right, Erik. It's all about self-assurance. A firm presence of mind, you can say. You think my sister and I got around easily? You must not care of other's opinions of you. You must have courage out there. Do you possess that quality, Erik?"
The boy in question looked off to the side, biting his lower lip as he contemplated his answer. His hands came up to fidget with each other, fingers picking at skin as he looked back up with hesitance in his features. "I...I don't know."
The twins turned towards each other before back at Erik. Arora held a sympathetic smile while Otto tutted disapprovingly with a shake of his head. "Well you are certainly going to need it if you want to move forward. Promise us you will find that courage and never let go of it."
Erik nodded hesitantly. "Uh, o-okay! I-I promise."
Otto narrowed his eyes towards him, weariness on his face. "Hmm. I don't see the promise within you, my boy. But do not fret, for we will help you find it."
His mouth turned into a smirk again, along with Arora's sympathetic smile. He leaned down towards Erik again, hands coming back down to his ribs. Erik yelped, body squirming again as Otto flexed his fingers against his divots. The wobbly smile turned into a larger one as nervous giggles leaked out of his mouth like a faucet. His hands came up to shove Otto's away as he shook his head. "W-wahahait! Mihihister-nohoho!"
He squealed as Otto's fingers wiggled deeply into his shirt, fast and unrelenting. Arora's own hand was back on his stomach, wiggling softly. The roughness of Otto and the gentleness of Arora made Erik slip back and forth between deep laughter and bubbly giggles. Arora's finger found his navel, dipping in and vibrating deeply. Erik's eyes widened and he shrieked sharply before throwing his head back, laughter unlike they had heard before emitting from him. "NOHOT thehehere!"
"Oooh," Arora grinned, "does this tickle, Erik?"
He nodded wildly, his hands springing down to try and push her fingers off his stomach. "Y-YEHES!" She chuckled at his honesty, cooing at him.
"Aww, you adorable, little mouse."
The blush returned to Erik's face as he laughed, nose scrunching up at the intense feeling currently protruding his navel and lighting up his nervous system. "Careful, sister," Otto chuckled, amusement evidently clear in his tone, "you're making the little mouse go all red."
Erik, despite wanting to push off the hands attacking his torso, shakily brought up his hands to cover his face. He whined embarrassingly, smile lines showing from the beneath his hands as he held them tightly on his cheeks and eyes. The twins cooed, letting out a small 'aww' at his cute mannerism. "Ehehehe, ohoho gosh!"
Otto chuckled, wiggling his hands towards the backs of his ribs. "Don't hide your face from us, Erik!"
"Yohohou're teasing mehehehe!"
His giggles spiked again as Otto wrapped his hands around the back of his ribs, all ten fingers delving in and digging into his thin t-shirt. Erik yelped, his back arching up and the heels of his shoes pounding against the floor. His hands fell from his face, showing his giddy smile and pink cheeks. They snapped towards Otto's own hands, pulling and shoving and failing to break them away from his ribs. "P-PLEHEHEASE!"
"Are you going to be courageous, boy?"
"Y-YEHEHES! YES I PROHOHOMISE!"
A snicker was just barely heard over the sound of his boisterous laughter. Otto held a grin, not pausing with his attack. He craned his head towards Arora, letting out a hum in thought. "Mm. What do you think, dear sister?"
Arora's finger in his navel paused as she looked at Erik's flustered and laughter struck face. She narrowed her eyes questioningly, her own grin brightening in amusement. "Hmm. I'm not sure he's capable of having it yet."
Erik whined and shook his head, letting out gasps in between his laughter as he fought for air. "I hahahave! Please! Ahahaha-"
"Maybe he needs just a bit more encouragement, Otto."
The man hummed in agreement. He leaned down more so Arora's hand was closer. She trailed it down to his hip, wrapping it around his waist and putting her thumb on the bone. Erik gasped, laughter becoming more panicked as he squirmed under them. "N-nohoho! Not there! I have cohohourAHAHAGE!"
The hand on his hip struck, thumb digging into it and making Erik scream before bucking his hips repeatedly and falling into heavy laughter again. "Oh my..." Arora giggled.
Otto chuckled at his reactions, continuing with drilling his fingers into his ribs. One of Erik's hands was at his ribs while the other tried to reach for his hip, both aiming to fight off the tickling fingers. They did nothing though, as the fingers remained unbothered in their respected spots. "I've never met anyone this sensitive." Otto grinned.
The two of them continued their attacks until Erik was in silent hysterics. His fighting became still, the air leaving his lungs as he fought to find it again. His hand tapped against the floor softly, indicating that he couldn't continue any longer.
Otto and Arora stopped instantly, bringing their hands away from his shaking torso and giving him the space to breathe. Erik took in deep breaths, thankful for the air that greeted his lungs. He laid he hands against his stomach as he curled onto his side, giggling out between taking in breaths. He closed his eyes for a moment before peeking back up at the twins with a bashful smile. "W-wohohow. Y-you're bohoth good at thahahat."
His words pulled at the heartstrings, making them smily warmly down at him. Otto offered out his hand, which Erik accepted after a brief moment of trying to sit up. He got to his legs, shaky and giggly still. Otto put his hand on his shoulder, giving it a reassuring squeeze. "So, what did we learn, Erik?"
Erik smiled, a hint of determination playing on his features as his eyes narrowed with self-assurance. "To be confident," he nodded, "and have courage."
Otto nodded with a proud grin, stepping back and collecting his saw from off the floor. He didn't turn it on though, just held it in both of his hands. Erik let out an internal sigh of relief at that. Arora craned her head to smile at him, nodding it towards one of the doors behind him. "Perhaps you should go find your little teammates."
Erik put a hand behind his head, scratching at his head hesitantly with a small, uncertain smile. "Uh, I'm not sure they'd want my help..."
Otto hummed. "You can bring them to us. We'll show them what real bravery looks like." His hand around the saw handle gripped tighter.
Erik's eyes widened and he shook his head, bringing his hands out in front of him to turn their offer down. "Ah..! I...I think I can try and make my voice heard." He chuckled lightly, trying not to anxiously swallow.
The twins snickered, gazing towards the boy with upright grins. "Go on now, my boy. If you have any trouble at all, you know where to find us."
Erik nodded with a gentle smile at Otto's reassuring words. "Thank you mister," he looked at Arora, "and ma'am." Arora let out a flattered laugh.
"Goodbye, dear Erik."
Their words would replay in Erik's head for the remainder of the trial as he trailed through the mall with resilience, successfully escaping with his fellow reagents, who would view him in a new light from then on.
