It was exciting— getting to do something outside of his usual department of physical therapy. Lee felt like a real doctor. Of course, he was only getting the opportunity because no one else wanted to treat the person who had caused great problems for Konoha in the past. Lee thought it cruel, as their greatest sworn oath as medical staff was to heal, not harm, no matter the patient. And while Orochimaru would not die from their injury if left untreated, the lack of care could cause emotional damage— Harm.
Lee often makes eye contact with the Sannin as he works, offering a smile here and there as reassurance that everything was okay. It’s when Orochimaru’s eyes move elsewhere and they make comments that Lee’s smile fades. Lee’s head whips around to look at his stack of books, eyes remaining there for a few seconds as he registers their words. The books— They weren’t good?
“Really?” Lee says with disbelief and defeat, his voice just a note higher than normal. He’s not fully paying attention to what he’s doing, and he’s pulled a strip of medical tape way longer than he needs. “The bookkeeper assured me that they were all excellent. Hmm..”
His attention is finally back on them. Lee furrows his brows and tries to search their face for deception, even though he knew he was terrible at reading faces. He’ll avert his gaze soon after, getting himself back on task. His thoughts are a little clearer after he dresses Orochimaru’s wound. The Sannin had credentials-- Lee had heard stories.
“I believe you.” He decides as he pulls off his sanitary gloves and sits back. “I have heard stories that you once wielded a legendary blade.”
